the race north of westbury is thirty miles distant from new york the rout of the contest is aiom the start along the jericho turnpike east to jericho thence along the road south burough and central park to the bethpage Beth page road then west along the bethpage Beth page turnpike to hempstead and west by slightly north along the hempstead road to Queens 1 thence east along the jericho road to the starting point the distance around is about thirty and one quarter miles and the route will be covered ten times figuring on an average speed of sixty mi lesan hour which is probably the most tle course will permit the race will be ia progress for at least five hours it the race be started between half past six and seven in the morning as planned it will not be concluded until about noon the course chosen for the race Is by no means ideal though it probably is as good for the purpose as any that could have been selected in the alcin ity of new york the road surfaces are fair to excellent and there are no grades worthy the name but there are four sharp corners to be turned that will be danger points to anything exceeding twenty mites an hour in places it Is too narrow for one machine to pass another at high speed in safety while the unimproved section of the bethpage Beth page turnpike is so dangerously covered alternately with broken stone and sloughed ploughed hed earth that in its present condition the rate of travel upon it could scarcely exceed thirty miles an hour SIXTEEN MILES straightway STRETCH tho longest straightway stretch is that along the jericho turnpike from queens to jericho a distance of about sixteen miles the road s undulating alth several short two per cent grades and the course is slightly winding but averaging twenty five feet in width tho surface of macadam is in goodjon altion in the centre though in frequent spots soft along the aides from queens to park the road and from hydo park to tha myneola road there are too many riseland rise sand dips to permit a speed much greater than forty miles an hour there Is a bad railroad crossing without gates north of myneola Ml neola r north of westbury where the race starts a grand stand to accommodate about 1000 persons Is in process of construction the roadway here is thirty feet in width and straight and level for two miles in either direction at jericho the first grade however will aid rather than retard as it acta somewhat like a banking of a track soft earth and gravel at the approach to the grade will have a tendency to cause tho slackening of speed the road though winding presents the most level surface in the circuit and Is capable ot holding speed of sixty miles an hour south of hacks ville it narrows down to an average 0 about fifteen feet in width making it necessary it one machine passes another for either to run partly on to the soft turf at the side into the bethpage Beth page road the turn Is at a right angle on the flat and Is obscured from a distance by trees in its present condition the bethpage Beth page pike for about two miles Is tiro worst on the course but road work is now in progress and it Is expected that improvements prove ments will be completed before the race A mile of improved road approaching pro aching hempstead Hempst cad presents excellent rolled gravel in the centre the macadam road through hemp alcad is wide and level and it continues to be fair through the meadow brook plains almost to queens from hempstead to queens a trolley track patrols it to the north at belmont park the road becomes bumpy and at queens there Is another sharp turn through soft earth from the hempstead road into creed avenue halt a mile further on after crossing railroad tracks at the toot of a grade a sharp turn Is made into the jericho turn pike THE DEED OF GIFT following is the deed of gift of the trophy I 1 WILLIAM K vanderbilt JR do hereby present a silver loving cup to the american automobile association under the
