oct 6 tho archbishop of canterbury speaking before a joint session of the house of bishops and house of deputies of the episcopal church at emmanuel church today delivered a message to the american body in which he urged that the church take steps to guard the religious life of the borne at session of the house of deputies several resolutions to make more stringent the canon on the remarriage at divorced persons were presented one resolution was aimed to the marriage remarriage re of a divorced person during the alfo of abb former partner the whole question will COEO up later after reporting against a change in the legal name of the church at this time the committee appointed by the last convention to consider the matter was discharged boston oct 8 A resolution was passed today at the episcopal convention providing tor a committee of seven bishops seven presbytery presbyters Presby and seven laymen to consider the question of making sunday school more effective W N singleton of washington D G introduced a resolution placing chaplains of the army and navy under the ecclesiastical control of the bishop of washington mr singleton also requested the convention to petition congress to provide separate places tor worship at all army posts the matter was referred to a committee the bouso of deputies voted to send a message of greeting to the english church congress at the afternoon session the archbishop of canterbury waa invited to occupy a seat on the platform during he convention dr J houston eccleston Ec closton of baltimore on behalf of the committee appointed to the various religious bodies regarding conformity as marriage of divorced persons a report the house voted to continue the committee in office the report Is as follows the committee appointed bishop doane dr creer and francis lyndo stetson as a subcommittee sub committee to carry out the purpose of the resolution under the commission was appointed and in response to the note addressed by the committee subcommittee sub to the representative organizations of other religious bodies a conference was called which hold its first meeting on tha 0 january in st bartholo mews parish new tori tho conference was organized organised sed under the title of the interchurch inter church conference on marriage and divorce by he election of bishop doane as chairman and rev dr W H roberts as secretary it hag several nil merical and in representative attendance and in interest and results it has adopted the following resolutions resolved that in recognition of the comity which should exist between the christian churches it la desirable and would tend to the increase of a spirit of christian unity tor each church represented in the conference to advise and it ecclesiastical authority will allow to enjoin ita ministers to refuse to unite in marriage any person or persons whose marriage such minister shall have reason to believe is tor bidden by the laws of the church in which either party seeking to be married holds membership A of the conference in reference to the question of state and national legislation made a report of which the closing paragraph Is that it Is possible to produce harmony in place of the prevailing want of may seriously be doubted it would require not aaby uniform legislation at a peculiar period but that the statutes of the several states on tho subject of divorce and remar re mar ariage should remain unchanged or should be only changed by common consent so that the original uniformity should continue to prevail what it any success can attend an effort in this direction will depend materially upon the possibility that the churches represented in the conference shall agree upon a uniform canon to apply to their church members and clergy whether this is possible the conference can best determine but the committee easily can reach the conclusions that it this be impossible the task of endeavoring to bring about legislative harmony certainly will be hopeless the states are not likely to operate cooperate co in producing uniform laws ent than the existing laws of the majority of the several states A brief discussion on the subject of changing the legal name of the church followed the presentation of the report of the committee appointed by the last convention for the purpose of considering this issue the report which was made public last spring recommended that no change be made at this time the deputies voted unanimously to discharge the committee provided the house of deputies should agree rev B talbot rogers moved that a resolution included in the report and signed by a minority of the committee on change of name be placed on the calendar the resolution omitted the words abc episcopal ln the prayer book title tho motion was
