| Show DEATH OF GEORGE ONE OF THE BEST KNOWN RESIDENTS OF OGDEN PASSES AWAY has been identified for over thirty years with ogdan railroad circles geo M karr lor mcay years depot master at the union depot passed away at 3 this morning at the kerr home corner of twenty first street and adams ave alter short severe struggle with grim death for months past mr kerr has suffered with bladder complaint but with great fortitude stayed at his post of duty until the recent serious attack seized him and then be became bedfast for about six days ho suffered excruciating pains and finally day before yesterday an operation was performed at his home by doctors rich and rich it was successful but left mr kerr la such a weakened condition that a general breaking down of the system occurred and death resulted about 3 this morning tho deceased was born april ath 1841 at new castle on tyne england when yet a boy ho served six years apprenticeship as printer and bookbinder but ho caro to follow that kind of work as a profession and after finishing his apprenticeship did no work of the kind in 1863 he was married at his home town and in that same year on may he left tor salt lake city he crossed the plains in captain thomas ricks company of seventy wagons in this journey across abo plains he proved that he wag of the stuff out of which heroes are aade the distance from SL louis to zion ho covered on foot walking tho entire distance and arriving in salt lake valley in october 1863 at the time johnsons army was encamped in utah ho was employed by the government as a messenger and labored in the government service until the army returned to the east in choso days mr kerr was noted as a long distance runner and pedestrian thero was but ono man in the state who ever beat him walking from ogden to salt lake city he started to work for the union pacific in echo canyon in 1869 and was employed at railroad work up to iho time ol 01 his demise he worked as porter bag and upon the erection of tho union depot was depo basteri ail cirii h position he was laboring when his last illness seized him in the death of geo M kerr ogden loses one of its best citizens one who in his quiet unassuming way did much for the advancement of tho cites interests As a tried and trusted friend he will be missed by mn ny tho thousands ol 01 railroad men in this country who knew him personally will look in vain tor the familiar figure at the office desk he was a friend to the newspaper man by whom he was respected for his sterling good qualities and his obliging manners during his fifteen years as depot master mr kerr met as many people as any other man in the city perhaps his thousands of friends here will learn with regret and sorrow of his demise he leaves a wife five sons and two daughters to mourn his loss time of funeral services will be announced later |
