Show OUR SALT LAKE just a rambling talk about things in general col trumbo home again salt lake city feb 13 aa predict ed in my last letter the political storm coee not center so much around the division of patronage by tho new administration as it docs which of the factions of the republican party hero will have the naming 0 the can recipients 0 that patronage the fight Is squarely between the friends ot senator kearns and the arlenda of george sutherland the latter composed 0 the insurgents who created the disaster to the republican ally ticket last fall it now looks aa it the kearns faction had won out it has hcan known and 1 forecast lat week that the keams republicans and the members of the city council friendly to him ached for the retention 0 I 1 C kelcey as city engineer dr sichart as health commissioner frank kilnes as superintendent 0 waterworks water works C A ereckson as superintendent ot parks W J lynch as ahlet ot polk e and peter S canute as water superintendent this would give them not only powerful political cal machinery to be used against the democrats but would give them such influence that sutherland and his supporters could make no headway against it and would eventually mean that there would never again be a re victory in sail lake city unless the sutherland forces capitulate or compromise candidates be found strong enough to unite the votes ot the party tho sutherland fortes desired all the above men removed and would be satisfied with the fire chief and a few oeners it would seem from the list eliat mayor morris sent in last monday night that the kearns republicans ari ar i to be favored for while some ot the kearns republicans were removed from office none of the friends ot sutherland remains or has been named for office these appointments by mayor morris if confirmed by the council will give the democrats nine appointees poin tees and the republicans seven tho republicans will havethe ba chief ot police superintendent of streets and superintendent of parks holdovers hol dovera city sexton oil inspector humane officer and one member of the board of health fending confirmation the appointments point ments have been referred to a consisting of one member from each ward the test vote was taken on referring them to this committee two republicans voting with tle democrats and giving them the majority in this connection it would be well to baale also that sutherland has lost influence in a bailiwick which has virtually wielded the influence that made george a factor in politics for awhile utah county republicans for awhile had sutherland enthroned as a political idol and his word would swing nearly the soled delegation from that county at any time since he has descended from one of the leaders of the party to simply the leader of a faction however and that faction in the minority her leaders of the utah county 0 0 P especially in hopes ot office or emoluments arising from political faithfulness arc transferring their loyalty most p them favor smoot as against but then smoot s in a position to aid them and they think will never be again they will probably flock the man who proves himself tho strongest at the next convention and friendship tor whom will not arouse antagonism on the part of any af pf tho old political leaders postmaster clove down t provo is not saying much as though he loves hia party well ho loves ils office better and to that office he will cling charles demoisey at present state statistician and formerly from utah county although now living here Is said to be out for the nomination for state audi tor while john degrey dixon state treasurer wants to move tip in the line of offices lie is accredited to utah county both of these men were staunch and loyal sutherland men fop merly but now they are taking no part in the faction fights this la but an indication di of the fact that of necessity the republican party ot this state must look outside the present salt lake manipulators tors for leaders to tako thealo victory tho democrats are batching vat ching the contest over the city with interest for they believe that upon mayor morris course depends their success or defeat fall so tar the mayor has failed to take counsel with the party leaders who aro making a determined effort to control tha party and the latter fail to approve of his appointments so far they believe that morris could make a deal with each of the factions so hat the democrats bould obtain the most important places and by this means build up a political machino which would mean a sweeping in salt lake city and county they argue that the democrats would then have a fighting chance in the state for the legislature and would be able to name the successor of kearns in the senate probably however the mayor may have taken counsel in other quarters for it Is said that john alanson ll anson city editor of the news Is a candidate for the senate from salt lake county he was a member of the lower house of the legislature in 1899 and was at first an ardent advocate of for the united states senate but before the first ballot went into the mccune camp and remained there until the end joe caine who managed raw una senatorial campaign and henry peery are also mentioned for he senate banker george C of ne ahl is the latest democratic candidate to be mentioned tor governor whit more has been a member of the state senate from juab county and mado a good record he la a solid business man with quite a following in his own id alarce number ot lean he Is not so very well in other parts of the state and this Is a good thing for democratic james moyle who made abo race once before and william provo are being belll boosted in connection with that position by heir numerous arlenda fr lenda dave dunbar and ills hearst loom lias dropped abbitt out of aught david aund that for some unaccountable rei on ho was 0 duwer in polli r bics tics as bo was five years ago when ho was county clerk hero and one of tho chief boomers of tha campaign of A W mccaine he met with a marble heart when he approached the leaders and he had not the necessary jingle of the guinea to attract the democratic rank and alle the well remembered form of colonel trumbo was seen on the street hero this week he had just come in from california and looks as prosperous as happy and as jovial as ever his presence Is a pretty good indication of the ruth of my statements edme weeks the effect that ho would be in this campaign in utah to reward his former political friends and punish a few enemies there Is no doubt but that he can find a way to da it it Is understood that the colonel stopped oft in ogden to give instructions aa to the course pt his morning paper there and 11 la probable that the bookfor look for something doing from the ogden end |
