W II e Quest For 7 or Peace Gre Great t hopes and great expect expeditions were kindled earlier earUe this month as a re result result result re- re sult o 0 the Popes Pope's speech to the General Assembly of the Un United ted Nations Ills His words were acclaimed the world over and found re rein response response re- re in millions of human hearts Surely they will serve for a long time to come las s a guide to a noble anoble goal BUT THE reality of peace for which man has searched for thousands of years till eludes us us CHAMPIONS OF PEACE The Pope has put the moral force and prestige of 01 his half half- half m m e m b be e r church church squarely on the line for lor world peace at a very critical time There are wars or rumors of war on every continent rang ranging in g from the very hot war In Vietnam to the civil up upheavals upheavals upheavals up- up in Africa AND ONE BY one one our conte contemporary cham p i ion o n s of peace have been dying off Iri In the short space of ofa a year the thinning ranks of the advocates of world peace have dwindled still further with the deaths of Herbert Hoover Adlai Stevenson and Albert Schweitzer Although a man of outstanding outstanding outstanding out out- standing professional ability ability ability abil abil- ity and of dedication as a public servant H Her Herbert e r b e r t Hoover was not a success as President He lie is best remembered for his hu humanitarian humanitarian hu- hu acts following each of the two world wars and for lor his lifelong devotion to the cause of 01 peace He was without doubt the best champion America has produced so far ARE THERE ANY JUST WARS Most of 01 us would agree I think that true peace must be based on Justice if it it is isto isto isto to survive But many of us have widely different opinIons opinions ions of 01 what cons constitutes tit ute s Justice in a given situation Our views are colored by our loyalty to our country by our backgrounds by our education and environment and by our o own experience n MOST Americans feel that the Civil War was a aJust aJust ajust Just war but there are a avery avery avery very great many people liv livIng living living liv- liv ing in the South who still vigorously dispute t that hat at claim And we are at present pres- pres ent in the midst of olan an agonizing agonizing agon- agon izing debate on the rightness rightness rightness right- right ness of our governments government's course course in Vietnam If peace Is to triumph war must eventually be outlawed and that goes even for so-called so Just wars I GLORIFICATION OF WAR Loyalty and patriotism are strong stirring words But how many sins h have a v e been committed by national i leaders aders throughout history as they appealed to these qualities in their follow follow- ers Love of 01 country and willingness to sac sacrifice r i ti c e even ones one's IU life In the na national national national na- na Interest or for the national honor have been Instilled in all the peoples of 01 the world since time im- im memorial READ REAn WHERE you will in inthe the history of 01 the progress of 01 mankind and you will wilt find war glorified a and n d the heroes of 01 war v venerated n rated We may be living in which aspires and andI 1 I believe we are but we weare weare weare are so brainwashed by the glorification of 01 war that we hardly know how to fo go about working effect effectively I vel y for lor peace Without being unfaithful to the sacred memory of those who died In war that we might live and prosper prospers we must search for lor u and honor new heroes who have been or who are men of peace We must train our children and grandchildren to look up to those who strive fora for a true world peace IS THE WORLD READY Time alone will tell how truly effective for lor peace has been the visit of the Pope to the UN Perhaps as President Johnson has said the papal speech may maybe maybe maybe be Just what the w world o 0 r rid l d needs to get us thinking on how to achieve peace IS THE world ready for peace I think not not be because because be be- cause from Irom childhood most of 01 the peoples of the world are taught to rely on the the might of 01 arms and on the power and righteousness of 01 their Individual countries The d desire for peace is indeed in our hearts but the will wUl to work for tor it has yet to be formed and nur nur- What we need is a Great Society that will em embrace embrace em- em brace everybody u the whole world I am confident this will wUl one day become a reality but I fear it will wUl bea bel be bela a long time building |
