the morning session being devoted to the reading of the quadrennial address of he board of bishops ot tho methodist episcopal church to the beneral conference and the afternoon to me receipt and reference of memorials from tho various annual conferences the morning session was presided over by dishop henry W warren and the afternoon session by bishop J W walden the various committees got together in the early morning hours and elected their respective chairmen and secretaries but as there was no business befaro them adjournment was taken until tomorrow beginning tomorrow the general conference will hold sessions only in the morning thus allowing the delegates to gho gh o their attention during the afternoons ter to committee work dr george elleott of detroit pro belted a memorial to the effect that the committee on episcopacy consider the advisability of the election of a colored bishop he aalde that he believed that the methodist episcopal church had reached a crisis in its relations with the colored race it wo are to hold the colored membership we now have he said we ought to give them some sort of leadership which they understand and trust and which understands them charles P mcclelland of new york lay delegate spoke in opposition to dr resolution mr acciel land said he was very sorry that this resolution was at this time that if the church had reached a crisis in its relations with the colored people tac was brought about by just such resolutions as ehte he believed that the race question had been brought before the general conferences entirely too often and he hoped that the present conference would see an end to this agitation he was willing he said to see any man elevated to episcopal honors regardless of color when the man should attain to such worth and distinction as would warrant this high recognition A resolution was by rev horace jacobs of central pennsylvania conference to request the publishers of the dally christian advocate the official organ of the conference to withdraw from ita advertisement columbe all reference to sunday newspaper one of the publishers of the advocate gave assurance to the conference that the resolution should be withdrawn there would be no further cause fo complaint on that score the reading of the quadrennial reports of the bishops of the methodist episcopal church to the general conference waa the which the church is facing the present membership of the church was reported as an increase of during tho four years the sunday schools include an aggregate of the world wide scope of the work of tho church was indicated by the review of the administration of bishops in foreign landa three features of tho last quadrennial were emphasized as standing out prominently the twentieth century thanks offering movement which brought into the treasury of the church for the work of education the open door mis flonary revival which has inspired the church with new generosity and tho observances which all over the english speaking world commemorated the two hundredth anniversary niver sary of john Weel cys birth the american university at washington was strongly commend edas well as the comans womans college of baltimore which indirectly suffered severe durins the recent fire in that city the relations between tho methodist episcopal church and the methodist episcopal church south were declared to be growing more fraternal and intimate A common hymnal common catechism and a uniform order of service are almost ready for publication and these will draw the bodies belll more closely together the suggestion was made that some mutual arrangement ran gement should be made whereby transfer of ministers and men froni one of these denominations to the other should bo expedited and made easy the question of supervising foreign mission fields whether by occasional visits of general superintendents from country by the residents of one of them in a mission field for a period of four years at a time or by the permanent supervision of a missionary bishop whose episcopal services shall be confined to that particular field was urged upon the conference as ono of the most important questions to be considered the time limit in the pastorate was referred to as one of the matters which would claim attention warnings were given against the current evils of the time political corruption the traffic the tyranny of trades unionism the greed of unscrupulous employers lunching lynching lyn ching the negro question and mormonism recommendation was made that a new chapter on popular amusements be added to the discipline admonishing methodists to guard their spiritual life and to avoid such amusements as have a dangerous or demoralizing tendency the chapter I 1 intended to take the place of the present para graph number which occasioned much discussion at the general conference at chicago four ago the address a whole made a deep impression and was received at tho end
