a source of keen regret to all the staff among whom she had come like a ray of bright light A strange fatality is noticed in the similarity of the last year of the afe of this young girl and mrs virginia berry her most intimate friend choso whoso sad death a few weeks after her wedding but a short time apo is well remembered by all friends and but a little over a year ao both were among the happiest young giris in the cuy with no thought of the dark shadows hovering over them mr van brunt and berry have been friends from boyhood and are now similarly bereaved within a year BOARD OF EDUCATION WIELDS AX prof william A wetzell supervisor of music mrs franc R elliott supervisor of drawing and prof george N mckay principal of the lowell school were offered up as a sacrifice by the board of education at its meeting last evening to give emphasis to the action prof samuel doxey was re em aloyed under the double title of supervisor of manual training and as principal at a salary of 1500 the object in giving mr doxey this double honor was to assure him of a good position in any event that is if the manual train ang department should be abolished tor any reason doxey would still be left as principal the inference is that the vacancy at the lowell was created for the purpose of caring for mr doxey who seems to have an unusually strong hold on the affections of the board of education the ight over this proposition lasted from eight in the evening till midnight most of the struggle wk place in secret session but no attempt was made to conceal what had taken place the surface talk was all for economy it was urged that the board must cut somewhere it had been decided to give the grade teachers their regular raise and this means an additional dit ional expenditure of here over the present year then it was proposed to dispense with all the supervisors except doxey this was ably so far as miss pollock the primary supervisor was con berned belden hendrson and young ranged themselves on one side and plead for the retention of all the supervisor a if this could not be done they favored dispensing with all bewman moyle branting cummings and caces man stood by doxey and he was saved from the wreck under the double acting arrangement given above bupt supt chris saved miss pollock with the argument that primary supervision was one of the most essential things in the entire system another peculiar feature of the battle is that while doxey pame off with flying colors his three assistants mra tomlinson miss jessup and miss cor by the wayside OSCARS YOUNG PASSES
