company under the superintendence of their own engineers As is frequently the cage in work of this kind un forseen difficulties rose in roadbed road bed construction for example at many points where prior to the commencement men cement of the work it was thought that olid ground existed of interminable depth it was found that a thick measure of mud laid for scores of feet beneath especially juet opposite the mouth of bear river where two 70 foot piles droop one on top of the other did not find secure bottom this was for only very short distance however and forms no insurmountable obstacle as the space can be easily bridged while the warm sun of the summer months rested on the waters of the lake it wa not difficult to find men who would take to the work of construction st ii the water in which they waded at times to their armpits arm pits but as the cold increased through the fall and winter it became hard to get men and the work of construction is progressing more slowly altogether there arc now about men who are engaged in this work the waters of the lake have been made a great help in this work in floating heavy timbers and in moving the ned pile drivers A beautiful small launch was used for rapid carrying of supplies and transferring of men the launch was named the lilay A large steam wheel boat feet in length was constructed and used by the company in the transportation of its heavier material and supplies this boat is christened the promontory from ogden to the cast shore of the lake and from lucin to the west shore of the lake the road bed is constructed after the most modern methods steel bridges are used at the weber river crossings and deteel cylinders where any irrigation canal or email stream is crossed when the cutoff cut off ts completed the freight division point will be removed from terrace to a point west of lurin at biontello SIon tello the track of the southern pacific from lucin to corinne will be abandoned the southam South cm pacific trains now come in over the oregon short line from corinne and will continue to do so until tho cutoff cut off is completed the southern pacific has this year dope millions of dollars worth of work along the line all the way from lucin to reno the alrack has been straightened and grades eliminated and the running time at the conclusion of 11 this work and distance will be most materially reduced all grading on improvement work between and wadsworth has been completed and track laying is now under way the work represents five contracts to the railroad company although a great amount of it ia sublet to smaller contractors the piece from wadsworth to browns station is now RAILROAD BUILDING ACROSS GREAT SALT LAKE FIFTEEN MILES OUT OF OGDEN UTAH 1 ann over iti 51 mile this stretch will include three heavy tunnels which are nearly completed the nert of newly is a moors to boano toano this is 30 miles long and will eave 5 miles in distance the company is alio doing work on this aide of sion tello hill which would indicate that the company bas concluded to climb the bill by means of fill ins and cuts rather than to use egav work around it one ot the plans next year is to construct a five mile tunnel through the sierra nevada mountains thua ing over 40 miles ot enow sheds nd a grade of third ot mile in distance the southern pacific when all the cutoffs are completed will be virtually a new road and one with some of the greatest engineering accomplishments in the railroad world what this road to ayden ia wage income is shown by the following list on the salt lake division with eastern terminal at ogden there are engineers and firemen conductors brakemen with a payroll of per month one third of these lay over in ogden and have homes here so that the yearly payroll ot the southern pacific directly in ogden is as follows i conductors brakemen engineers and firemen sg gregath per year switchmen 20 aggregate wages effton Shop men aw wages station men alone THE UNION PACIFIC is the eastern outlet of the systems and is known as the great overland route daring the past two years millions of dollars been spent on the road improving it by cutting out curves and grades and ballasting th road bed heavier deteel haa been laid along the entire route two feats 0 engineer iri of mammoth proportion were completed the tun nel and the aspen tunnel on abe
