Show CARRIE NATION ON A BUST she wrecks a saloon before church sunday morning topeka kan feb 17 mrs nation put in a busy sunday in topeka today and as a result the capital city of the state has experienced more genuine excitement than can be remembered by the oldest inhabitant mrs nation succeeded in having the contents of a notorious joint smashed broke into a cold storage plant addressed a large mass meeting of men and women and was arrested tour times the last time she was arrested was as she was coming out of the church where the mass meeting was held she says she will begin tomorrow morning chwe she left off today and will not rest until all the joints in topeka have been closed this morning at 6 just as the big bell on the church ot the assumption tower was striking the hour mrs nation sallied out efrom the statehouse grounds at the head of men and women all armed with hatchets and moved on the joints ot the city nobody knew but mrs nation what the plans of the raid were to be in the crowd were a large number of the students ot washburn college some ot the ministers ot the city and a number of professional and business men the crowd marched in perfect military order there was no excitement as the men and women were following recognized leader whom thy trusted implicitly the company marched silently out of the statehouse house grounds down kansas avenue to the place on east seventh street kept by edward murphy and amid the screams of the women the shouts ot the mn and the dictatorial commands 0 the policemen present trying to protect the property the front windows were smashed in and coon there was very little left of what had once been a well furnished joint mrs nation was arrested here and after being taken to the police station was released she then hurried back to the livery barn in which conre bars were kept ami smashed them then at the head of twenty followers she went to the cold storage plant and entered in the search of some liquors she thought were stored anere this time mrs nation was arrested by the county authorities and was taken to jail in a patrol wagon it was after noon before she was released from lall on bond and after taking denaer with sheriff cook she went to the first christian church where she was accosted by an officer with a warrant and taken to the county jail again she stayed this time tor two hours and finally her bond was signed by one of the of tha city who is a prominent negro politician it |
