against vice lust inaugurated there were only 38 ot the appointed as a general committee at the mass meeting on wednesday night who were present at the meeting last night but those who were present were enthusiastic and determined and some ringing speeches were made in favor ot the movement A large number of excuses were received which stated that the senders had already made engagements or last evening when they were appointed on the committee and so they could not attend but promised to be present at subsequent meetings ot the committee the first business last evening was the election of president aa chairman and rev john W taylor as secretary of the committee of president Shur tUff stated that the object of the committee was to appoint a committee of seven as an executive committee to carry out the wishes and suggestions of the committee of one hundred C A moved that chairman and secretary taylor oe ex members of the committee and chairman and secretary respectively ively of the same the motion was carried at athla point some lengthy discussion came up as to whether it would not be advisable to increase the number of members of the executive committee to eleven tour of whom would be ladles it was finally decided that the number should stand at seven as stated in the original resolution passed at the mass meeting on wednesday evening in this regard it was ex by mr agee that seven would be as large and convenient a working executive committed as desired and that at any rate this committee would have authority to appoint sub commit tees to aid in the work this view was at length adopted and it was decided that the committee be appointed by the committee ot from its own members the names given in the introductory paragraph ot this article were chosen prof L F 0 with the remark that he hoped no cormons mormons Mor mons no methodists no baptists no denomination of any kind would be known in this movement but all would be united in furtherance 0 the cause this sentiment was loudly applauded after some further discussion as to a change in the size and personnel of the executive committee already appointed mr agee made as a motion his previous suggestion that the executive committee appoint such sub commit tees as in its judgment was necessary the motion was carried commissioner stanford who had been appointed on the executive committee but declined explained that his action was taken because of illness recently his medical advisers had cautioned him against too excessive work and while he did not wish to shirk any duty he felt that being already engaged as county commissioner with heavy business to attend to he could not be an active member of the executive committee but would do all in his power as a member of the committee of to aid la the movement the explanation was accepted volney C gunnell offered a suggestion to the committee that they call a meeting ot the saloon keepers and druggists and that moral suasion be used with them to abandon any violation of the ordinances which may exist the proposition brought forth a storm ot remonstrance and was finally on motion laid on the table during the course ot stating his objections A W agee said it you have appointed me a member of this committee to seek out the internal gamblers and effect a compromise I 1 will resign from it he favored vigorous action the prosecution of violators of the ordinances and the impeachment of officers who tailed to ido their duty he was supported in this position by addresses made by charles noble J W taylor and commissioner stanford and the expressed sentiment ot the great majority present commissioner stanford then offered as suggestions tor the guidance ot the committee the following First Committee of seven to visit the mayor and chief ot police and demand the enforcement of the ordinances against any infraction of its provisions second require the chief of police to have all glaring signs taken down all blinds of windows and doors drawn aside and all obstructions removed so that an unobstructed view may be had of the interior of the saloons on sundays third that all slot machines card rooms etc leading to gambling in saloons and tobacco stores be suppressed fourth that all minors found in saloons be arrested with the saloon keeper in whose place they are found the same to apply to drunkards fifth ball games gaming fishing or other sports be suppressed stores closed etc on the sabbath day sixth that any lewd woman found on the streets plying her vocation to entrap men be arrested seventh that the committee visit the police justice and demand that he pass on habitual violators of the law the full penalty and instead of money fines impose imprisonment where the ordinance eo provides eighth have this committee report to the committee of when the chairman deems it necessary these suggestions were accepted to be considered by the executive committee commissioner stanford also suggested that places of business could close on wednesday afternoons at 2 and allow the employed emp loyes to attend the ball games then instead of sunday bishop watson stated that in an endeavor to close ball games two years ago the city ordinance was found defective and so remains today the meeting then adjourned an informal meeting of the executive committee for the mere discussion of further action was held after the
