| Show RAILROAD NOTES H M clay of the passenger department of the union pacific at salt lake has been to san francisco the san pedro los angeles and salt lake railroad recently placed an order for bics tics to be brought from oregon the rails and ties now ordered will build about 70 miles of road on the california end headmaster mcentee of the oregon short une came up from salt lake this morning and went up to beaver canyon to inspect the work on tho bridges there two new southern pacific engines came in to ogden over the R G W last night and will be sent to sacramento tor use on the montana division they are of the 2100 class numbered respectively 2118 and 2119 lieutenants chambers and wok passed through ogden last night in charge of recruits tor service in the philippines the men were enlisted at fort slocum new york and expect to sail for san francisco on a transport january 18 the preliminary report on the income account of railways in the united states for the year ended june 30 1900 prepared by the the interstate commerce commission contains operating railway companies representing miles of line the gross earnings of the railways included in this report were or per mile of line of these earnings were classed as passenger earnings and as freight earnings the gross earnings shown in the fiscal report lor the preceding year were the great cascade tunnel which was opened for traffic last week will not increase the passenger or freight rated so far as known at the present time the tunnel has been under construction tor the past thred years and the total cost Is in the neighborhood of although no definite information can be obtained on the subject at the present time it Is known bow ever that the appropriation for the present year was for the reason that the company will make a great saving in the cost of operation the charges on freight and passenger business will probably remain as it Is now the action of the northern in removing the mileage charge on freight through the bozeman tunnel takes the last extra mileage charge from freight in the state of montana the only tunnel charge made la the state Is on passenger traffic between butte and helena through the wickes tunnel when the montana central line was first built from butte to helena it was agreed with the northern pacific that the two roads would charge a competitive rate tor miles the distance over the montana central la about 75 miles and over the northern pacific via garrison miles no extra charge Is made tor freight passing through the wicker tunnel the reason that the company is justified aln charging for an extra 25 miles through the tunnel Is that it it had avoid cid the construction of the tunnel the distance of winding around the hills would have been miles As it is the passengers pay for 25 miles and get a better and quicker service |
