| Show SALT MAKES HEART BEAT WONDERFUL DISCOVERY MADE BY CHICAGO PROFESSOR chicago dec 25 the record tomorrow will say experiments on turtles have convinced D jacques loeb aad prof D J langle physiologists at the university of chicago mat common salt in the blood makes tho heart beat what Is mere they claim that not only does salt keep the heart in action but that it possibly may cause the heart to beat again after it has once stopped for several months dr loeb and prof langle have been experimenting to secure the necessary result to prove their theory they have conducted a series of delicate scientific tests bearing upon the pulsation ot the heart and today made public the announcement that the results they obtained had verified beyond doubt their theory that the presence ot salt in the blood caused the beats ot the heart in the experimental work by the physiologists turtles wore used almost exclusively after snipping on the bead in as humane a way as possible the lower part ot the shell was removed and the heart taken possession of instead 0 taking the organ as a whole a small strip from one of the ventricles was used the blood was removed and the piece of flesh suspended in different solutions in this way their conclusions clu were adduced dr loeb and prof langle claim that the fallacy of the early belief that the heart beats because it Is full of blood was quickly chown when a strip of the turtles heart was suspended in a solution of sodium chloride and a regular series ot beats began separated from all nerve connections the lifeless strip of heart muscle responded perfectly to the presence of the salty solution for weeks the experimenters ere worked to ascertain what qualities salt possessed to cause this rhythmic beating of tho heart that were not possessed by calcium or potassium they found a solution ot the problem in the tact that the action of sodium chloride was due to tho peculiar character of the sodium in making the investigations they discovered that pure sodium chloride solution was destructive of heart tissues and by mixing calcium aad potassium solutions with the sodium solutions they found that the poisonous effects of the chloride wera destroyed |
