Show washington papers get his opinion of utah attains slate has kept its compact the ho davs ath the nation no new polygamous been contracted why have marria es the crusade originated the editor of the standard writing irom washington says ot the interview bad with him by washington newspaper reporters that at the time of ane interview he thought ana reporters were simply quizzing him for their own information and not for publication otherwise a number ot errors that wore made would have been avoided by giving them a prepared interview instead of trusting to a run nang conversation and the memorizing ot the newspaper men as no notes were taken by them however the substance of what was said is near enough correct and we reproduce the following from the washington just as it appeared in that paper quite a different story 0 the roberts case from a gentile standpoint Is told by mr william glasmann ot ogden utah now a guest at willarde Wll larde hotel in this city mr glasmann is a tall well formed gentleman of about forty five and camo originally from the state of iowa he sat in the lobby of the hotel last evening smoking a cigar as he talked rather energetically of cormons mormons and mormon influences in the home commonwealth he has a plump ruddy face a clear intelligent blue eye and when he takes off bis big felt hat displays a head that is mostly bald mr glasmann Is the editor of the daily standard an evening paper of and Is vice president of the national republican league he comes to washington to attend the approaching convention of that body he is also president of the utah republican state league what ahei iney going to do with roberts mr glasmann asked showing a very ready disposition to enter conversation about the case it looks as they intended to unseat him well I 1 hope they will mr glasmann answered promptly 1 I believe we should send a republican back here to take his place what do the people of utah think about bis case was the question put to mr glasmann now let ma tell you that this agitation against mr roberts never would aasc been had not the salt lake tribune started it there are only two republican dallies in the slate th e tribune which Is edited by judge C C goodwan ln and the daily standard my own paper you are a silver republican mr glasmann A straight republican he replied FIRST senatorial CONTEST judge goodwan ln expected to be one of the first two senators from utah mr glasmann continued had it not been tor unexpected developments a pro gramme arranged so that one of the arst senators would be a mormon a the other a gentile would flare been carried out goodwan would so been selected as the gentile sen to tor his paper had been a strong cenelle organ and he had every prospect ot receiving the gentile votes in the first legislature but when the political compact had been arranged judge goodwan showed a great deal ot eagerness to conciliate the cormons mormons Mor mons and when the pioneer statue was dedicated at salt lake he made a speech which was eo strongly mormon in ita sentiments that be estranged the gentiles I 1 think he spoke much more strongly than any mormon would have bione tione the result was that the gentiles refused to support him in the legislature tor senator and of the two gentile candidates brought out mr arthur brown and judge C W ben nelt mr arthur brown was elected since that time judge goodwan has been a discontent and with the election of mr roberta he started a crusado in his paper which has aroused the country he has continually charged that the cormons mormons were violating the laws against plural marriages and that the state was breaking abo compact embodied in the enabling act the tribune began to make charges that new polygamous marriages were being made I 1 kept a standing offer at the head ot my editorial column to pay tor each one ot the first 10 po marriages that the tribune wild prove bad been contracted since uio admission ot utah as a state I 1 avan t had to pay out a dollar ye on account ot that offer said mr agias gias mann ATTITUDE OF THE TWO PAPERS your paper is a rival ot the salt tribune is it not rin acra are published in rival wies was the genallo leader I 1 voted against air roberts in the congressional election in 1898 but I 1 know that a large body ot the gentiles in the county voted for him so that he received in a normally republican county a majority of 1500 ho received a salu larger majority in salt lake county I 1 know that many republicans voted for him because they hoped that air roberts election might eventually lead to the of the cormons mormons Mor mons who are the brains of the democratic party in the state they such action as good politics but arent your two statements contradictory was the question asked mr glasmann how can it be that not more than 20 per cent of the gentiles of utah want mr roberts unseated while so many voted tor him with a view to eventually disfranchise ing the mormon vote HURTS UTAH AS A STATE there arc a great many republicans who voted tor mr roberts was mr Glas manns answer with the end I 1 have mentioned in view who are unwilling to have any part in the subsequent proceedings the crusade was begun by charging that utah as a state bad been violating the enabling act you will notice that the country has been wrought up over the idea that mr roberta Is a polygamist it is seen now that the reputation of ahe state is being injured I 1 Is polygamy still practiced in the older cormons mormons still retain their plural wives said mr glasmann they are determined in that course it would make no difference if they were sent to the penitentiary again and again they will be set free only to return to their old relations there at the time was a tacit understanding the enabling act was passed that leoso older cormons mormons Mor mons who are not only persistent but sincere an fn their belief should not be disturbed it they continued to live with the alvea they had hitherto married the only we insisted on firmly waa that no further polygamous marriages should bo contracted tr A few years ago about three per cent of the births in utah were from polygamous marriages now it is only about one per cent within ten years when these older cormons mormons have passed away I 1 venture the prediction that there wont be any births from polygamous marriages in the state it this tacit understanding existed that the older cormons mormons should be allowed to continue with their plural wives why is it that the legislature enacted a law continuance of those relations a misdemeanor punishable by fine and imprisonment REGARDS STATE STATUTE AS A MISTAKE that statute was a mistake on the part of our code commission was mr Glas manns reply we appointed several gentlemen to codify our laws some of them honestly believed that the provision you refer to which originally igi nally came from ane edmunds law enacted by the congress ot fhe united states wag a part of the state law and I 1 should say that mr robert W young a mormon attorney and a thoroughly honest man entertained that opinion the statute was slipped la following the statute forbidding polygamous marriages forever after the enabling act the legislature adopted the entire code and in that way the objectionable statute became a law it remarkable that no one of the cormons mormons in the legislature discovered it to make a fight against its acceptance the cormons mormons are a thoroughly odest people said mr glasmann do not delleva a man a thief until he has been proven so they had implicit confidence in the members of the code commission and trusted them to do their work properly do you understand in utah that mr roberts la a polygamist he deny it does he asked mr glasmann ho admitted it here the ogden editor drew an envelope from his inside coat pocket and brought out a large roll of newspaper clippings he selected one that purported to bo a copy of the debate in the constitutional convention of utah over tho amendment regarding polygamy it contained the speech of delegate goodwan ln of salt lake and that of representative roberts the present representative elect from dails county mr glasmann read quite a portion of roberts speech in that convention ven tion where he combat tod the remarks of delegate goodwan that it the constitution is adopted and utah Is admitted as a state the people can revise or call a convention and make a new constitution within a year or two ROBERTS ARGUMENT IN convention according to the article displayed by mr glasmann mr roberts said 1 I do not think that this amendment should bo adopted by this convention in the spirit in which it was discussed by the gentleman from salt lake one of the reasons for having a stenographic report of these debates as I 1 understand it was for the purpose of assisting those who will interpret the constitution in understanding what the intent of the convention that framed the constitution was and sir if wo adopt this amendment in iho spirit in which that gentleman discussed it those who shall interpret the consal gutlon in the light of what was said upon the various would be led to conclude that this amendment was not adopted by tho convention with any real intention to have it pua in force but merely for the purpose of removing it from una eyes of the president of the united states who is to pass upon this instrument and his counselors and to silence any opposition that might be made against it on the part of the sectarian peoples throughout the united states now sir I 1 scorn all such proceedings as that I 1 believe that what we do hero we do with real intent of heart and without nonsense and for that reason and in this spirit wo should not adopt this amendment the mormon church said mr glasmann as ho finished reading from the clipping honestly to discontinue polygamous marriages beey have kept that agreement it I 1 had I 1 any evidence that they were doing to i the contrary I 1 should start a light against them ina earnest I 1 have been iu utah for twenty years I 1 can remember when the cormons mormons refused to havo any boccal intercourse with the gentiles As boys we were not allowed by the cormons mormons to go to dances or to associate with the mormon girls would not go into business partnerships with gentiles they would not celebrate our fourth of july and in fact they seemed like a foreign people in a foreign country RELATIONS ARE MORE FRIENDLY now all that la changed most of the cormons mormons and gentiles are on friendly terms socially and their families mingle they are associated in business enterprises with the gentiles and they celebrate the fourth as elaborately as any people la the country they are enthusiastic tor the stars and stripes are patriotic and make honest sturdy citizens what have you to say of the gentile delegation now in washington to assist in proving the charges against mr roberts dr T C ilaff the methodist Is a whole substantial and thor hughly honest man replied mr glasmann who was very hearty in his praise of the man 1 I have known for many years and ho is an upright and influential citizen but he ia mistaken about the case of mr roberts ho believes that the law was really intended to prevent the older cormons mormons from continuing their relations with the plural wives they married before the enabling act was passed and be Is acting honestly on that belief Is the mormon church mr roberts in his tight no said mr glasmann president snow steadfastly declares that alie church Is out ot politics and while be may be in sympathy with mr roberts he will not countenance the use of church funds or church influence to assist him |
