Show ATTLE FOUGHT union and nonunion non union miners engage in an armed con filet governor of illinois called upon to send arms and troops but the sheriff is informed he must exhaust all resources before armed intervention by the state will be deemed Imperative Union city in ruins st louis july 1 A special to the post dispatch from carbondale says union city named from the tact that H Is inhabited by union miners was the scene of battle last night about midnight and as a result the town Is in ruins the nonunion non union ne gores and other men employed by brush at bis mines near fredonia having become crazed over the killing of the woman yesterday went to the camp which consists of nine houses and opened fire on them which was at ones returned the battle raged until the union miners run from their homes and took refuge in the clump of tim ber close to the village the nonunion men at once applied the torch to the houses and all were burned to the ground after the men had destroyed considerable property previously occupied by the union men they moved on the woods and until daylight the fusillade was kept up no lives have so far been reported lost in the engagement ga at union city union miners have been arriving at the scene of the trouble all night the outcome must ba a long out battle both sides seemed determined to win springfield july 1 acting governor worder today received a telegram from sheriff gray at carterville Cart erville saying he was powerless to control rioters and asking that rifles and two hundred troops be sent at once the acting governor immediately ordered rifles and ammunition sent to sheriff gray and ordered him to summon and arm a posse no troops will be ordered out until the sheriffs resources are exhausted sheriff gray telegraph ed that a coroners inquest was held over tha body of the killed yesterday and several warrants issued sheriff gray arrested three men but when on djs way to the jail his carriage was surrounded by the mens sympathizers the horses cut loose and the prisoners released no further disorder had occurred at union city up to noon today acting governor wardner says ho will nol order troops to the scene until the sheriff has exhausted all his resources st louis july 1 A special to the post dispatch from marion says the two negroes who were taken from the sheriff by a mob in the street at carterville Cart erville last night were brought here at noon in the custody of two union miners and lodged la jail union miners from other towns are gathering there today in large numbers grave apprehension is felt by the officials that the gathering means continued and serious trouble for bruchs men and the nonunion non union negro miners the sheriff has sent another message to acting governor wardner this afternoon ter noon in the course of which he eald nothing of soldiers armed will control the situation at carter ville the nonunion non union miners and bruchs are armed and the union men are gathering with the announced intention of destroying the mine the strikers are several hundred strong determined and well armed order troops there at once the situation is too serious and the numbers engaged to strong for the sheriffs posse ship all guns to marion over 1000 shots have been fired since noon yesterday st louis july 1 A special to the i post dispatch from marion says when coroner armstrong concluded the inquest at carterville Cart erville over the negro woman anna carr who was killed by the mob that fired into the coach at fredonia mines james hicks ed ell brooks georgo dutton mike brown negroes and john piano an italian were held as guilty of the murder these six were the only members of the mob that could be recognized by the witness sheriff gray who waa present at the inquest arrested hicks and brooks being unable to find the rest the prisoners were taken from him by a mob in the streets of carterville Cart erville he succeeded in getting away with hicks and landed him in jail here late last night chicago july 1 walter B smith in whom the Onwen tsia members most of their hopes for the champion chipi has celebrated bla return to the lake forest course by defeating the two men who are counted upon to quality monday C B macdonald fell before smith by the decoro of 3 down and 1 to play and terry jr ali yale man who is entered from ardsley was defeated G down 5 to play john areld jr conqueror of smith in the yale championship contest this spring was defeated by terry a 1 up w 1 |
