Show I The Russian People The people of the West most of whom believe in both free flee freedom I Ij dom dam of the individual and the j democratic process must unI understand un un- I 1 the tho mentality of the Russian people if we WC are to exploit exploit ex ex- I 1 the limited chance of in m influencing in those currently under the yoke oke of Communist I It is often asked how the Russian people patiently put up with the evils and lin limitations of the Communist st system First of all one must remember that these people have never known knO real personal freedom and democracy democracy de de- and know nothing i better than what they have toI to to- I day I The standard of or living in Russia was lower under the Tsar than it Is today under I Communism The Communists I helped to power in 1917 by the 1 Germans to whom the Communists Com Coin I I surrendered have had forty five years now to indoctrinate i In nate the people and only ther the r elder elderly can remember the I I times of the Tsar And the last years of the Tsars Tsar's reign were years of terrible hardship r So how much can we expect I from the Russian people blindfolded blind folded for all these years ears and knowing only that today little as they have thc they are better off than they were under the Tsar materially Our expectations expectations must be reasonable We can e expect the Russian people to eventually demand more freedom and democratic process and we must do everything every thing we can to penetrate the theIron theIron theIron Iron Curtain and tell the Russian Russian Rus Rus- sian sign people the true story of the free enterprise system But it ma may be a slow development We cannot expect the Russian Russian Russian Rus Rus- sian people to suddenly Y and immediately understand or desire desire desire de de- de- de sire our system Nor can we assume that our system is so perfect that mere merely as an example example example ex ex- ample to the world it will eventually win over everyone to its cause That will have to come in good time as we succeed succeed suc suc- cec in penetrating the censorship censorship censorship censor censor- ship and Iron Curtain with our message and improving our system Perhaps the germ we can spread which will do more good than any other is the germ of individual freedom we hold so dear Tl This s spark has been the igniting force behind most of the worlds world's great democratic democratic dem deni- movements mo and In time it t will produce a ground swell of oC totalitarian anti sentiment which will overthrow sion It took the American colonists some years before they resolved to o fight and die for or ence It is disappointing that the he Russian people do not feel U this his s way even as late as 1962 But then the Russian peasant has las endured an incredibly hard existence for and knows little of freedom He has never enjoyed it He mus must learn about it from others then from abroad That Thatis is s why we must do our best to tell our story inside Russia and get the message to the people of f Russia Even if U we do our best est it may take some time before the Russian people demand demand de de- de mand the freedoms and rights which many western peoples have lave long enjo enjoyed ed But eventually the Russian people will demand individual freedom and overthrow dictator ship That is the trend and J history his his- story s- s tory ory of the world It could be a along along long ong time tune before this reaction is successful Meanwhile we can aggressively tell the story of the free enterprise system to all the world and do what we can to show the light to the people of the USSR That is our hope since Communist Part Party leaders in possession of the power of state will not reform reform reform re re- re- re form themselves And they are not interested in a just Ujust solution solution solution tion to world problems or real democracy |
