such an end in view the indianapolis trade called the conference he hinted that the retirement of the greenbacks is a step in the right direction president adams eaid farther within the last thirty days the people of abia country have shown that they are unalterably opposed to a cheap and fluctuating dollar of an uncertain value and that they ara not disposed to follow untried paths that lead to beai ness unrest or new departures depar turea in financial theories that only end in national dishonor and a depreciated currency we must not take this overwhelm in t expression of the people however as a final and complete settlement of the issues involved noraa an unquestioned acceptance of our present monetary tem but rather as a protest against a step backward between the lines of the returns ot the recent election there i is shown a pronounced sentiment favoring currency reform with an evi dent purpose on the part of the conservative serva tive and reflective men to examine into our national finances and remove with the least possible delay whatever weakness or defect may appear different view ar entertained as to the method of procedure and details of plane in the matter of currency revision but after our grievous and costly experience we are forced to the conclusion that the time lias now arrived when the government must either discontinue the banking business with its expensive and complicated system or go into it on a broader better defined and mure comprehensive scale the game is not worth the candle the burden is too heavy to be safely borne and no individual corporation or government can conduct business on a pound and aate basis who has demand notes calling for millions of dollars in existence and circulation cu lation which notes are liable in a period of stringency and panic to be brought to alie counter for redemption and when redeemed are ibus acting as a standing menace to the government reserve and a continual threat to the trade and business of the country causing disturbance and unsettled values of every character politicians are proverbially timid even to the verge of cowardice and are often indisposed to consider economic questions or acts on matters of national policy unsupported by public sentiment but when anat sentiment is crystallized and given definite shape by the 1 mercial bodies and business of the nation it becomes a moral force and reorganized power which our law makers will not ignore or refuse to heed it would be sate to predict that our national congress would receive the well matured fully considered and practical active successful men of affairs who were in touch with the trade and commerce ol 01 the country us an authoritative declaration favoring a reconstruction of our financial methods and system
