To clean house witlwut it is sheer folly, since it does the work twice as fast and twice as well, f"''. ,1- Building lloiiara of Paper. The utilization of paper in tba arts of industry and construction presents a notable example in the recent erec-tion of a new Hamburg hotel, in north-ern Germany, the structure being built entire of paper boards compressed to the hardness of ooa. One advantage of special importance attributed to this novel description of building ma-terial is the circumstances tha by being impregnated with certain chem-ical solutions, it cau be made abso-lutely tire proof; the same process of treatment also secures it against the attacks of destructive insects, and might thus specially recommend it for use in certain fiver valleys in the trop-ics, wood-eatin- g ants having been known to demolish large frame build-ings in less than a month. For some time past a firm at Dresden has suc-cessfully engaged in the manufacture of tool handles and shafts from com-pressed paper chemically prepared, the articles being not only very hard and firm, but possessing the quality of being of heat. An-other German firm is making pulleys of pasteboards pressed by hydraulic power, having an iron core and strong casing, and are supposed to take up less room, generate less friction, and are water proof. HUSSIAN CIRLS. Ther Mr-- y Young After Short and Sweet Kngaireinenta. Tho daughter is a irreat pot in Kus-hia- n families, perhaps because there are generally more sons than daugh-te- :. Take the younger members of the imperial family as an example, and we find twenty-tw- o grand dukes and only seven grand duchesses; and this may be stated to be nlxmt the average proportion in most families. The necessity for men in the rural districts as assistants in the agricultural labors of their fathers has given rise to a saying: One son is no son; two sons are half a son; but three are a wholo son." Notwithstanding the pride and satis-faction with which the birth of a boy is hailed, the little girl is the darling, the object of the tenderest affection and care of parents and brotht rs, not to speak of other adoring relatives. Much is not expected of her in the way of assistance in the family; she is indulged as far as their means and circumstances permit, and she lakes it quietly as her due, but it is rarely that she does not voluntarily and tacitly contribute her share in helping her mother. Her occupations are much the same as those of all Euro-pean girls, but parish work in Russia cxistoth not for her. She cannot have cliiMses at Sundny-sehool- s, as religion in taught by priests or deiteonu. It would bo thought quite extraordi-nary und improper wore a young un-married girl to visit the sick or poor in towns, but in villages it 18 some-times done under the direction of mam-ma or grandmamma. She is undoubt-edly fond of pleasures, likes to be well dressed, and generally adores dancing. .Music is not the Kussian girl's forte, nor is solo singing. Most of thr Insti-tutka- s, though they thoroughly know the theory of music, play like a child of 12; of course there are exceptions, but it is seldom you find a girl able to play a quadrille or polka offhand. (iii'ls marry w hen young in Russia-- ami there are very few of those most estimable individuals called old niaiils. There are no colonies for the Russians to run away to, nnd statistics show that the births of boys much exceed those of girls. Ivong engagements aie not approved of, they seldom last longer than a few months, during which time the fiancee is the mistress of the house. Her girl friends assemble to help to sew the dowry, the sewing afternoon generally ending in a dance after tea, when the bridegroom drops in with a few bache-lor friends. Another wedding is thus often arranged, and so on, little by lit-tle, tilL, like the fifty-on- e cards in the game of "old maid," they pair off, and one, generally of the sterner sex, i.si left forlorn. I KccpInK Flowers. A new method of preserving natural flowers has been discovered by an Eng-lish lady, whose process is well worth considering, says Farm and Fireside. The flower buds were cut just as they were about to open and the ends of the stems covered with sealing wax. Each was then wrapped separately in paper and laid away in a box. When they were wanted she clipped the stems just above the wax and immersed them in water, to which a little nitre had been added; and, though the flowers had been gathered nearly a month before, on the morrow they opened with a much beauty and fragrance as if fresh-ly plucked. A Full IHoon. 1 His name was Moon. Ho was iJ member of an association which wal about to hold its first annual banquet! and Mr. Moon was down for a speech. He had never made one in his life, but under pressure, being foreman in the shop in which most of the members worked, he had consented in amonient of recklessness, to do his best During the feast, wine flowed freely and Mr. Moon drank rather more than his share, but he knew he had a great task before him and he was obliged to raise his courage up to the proper pitch. He heard the other speakers one after another address the assemblage and begin with: "Ladies and gentlemen," and when his turn came that was about as far as he had got toward having anything to say. He had determined to say that much anyway and he arose unsteadily to his feet. As he braced himself against the table, he chanced to look out of the window and he saw the round yellow orb of night shining directly upon him. It was an inspira-tion, and he said beginning as the others had done: "Ladies and gentlemen; I thank you for this honor, the moon is full with-out and the Moon is full within." As he spoke he pointed first to the lumi-nary through the window and then smote himself dramatically upon the breast and sat back, or rather fell back, into bis chair. It was a short speech but it made the hit of the evening. IClH trlc Llclita and KyealjrliL. Dr. John A. Tayne, oculist snys: "Most persons who use the incandes-cent electric light like a new lamp be-cause the light is whiter and mere bril-liant than after the lamp has been in use for two or three weeks. This is wrong. It is the dazzling white light that harms the eye. An old lamp is the best, for in these the light has become changed to a pale yellow, which is the ideal color. Just lis in noonday bright-ness human Bight is not so clear and as at the yellow sunset, so a new incandescent burner is not so good for the eye as an old one. An old burner so adjusted and shaded that the light from it does not shine in the face, is the ideal artificial light An argand gas-burn- oonies next The use of the are light should bo confined to street lamps. Some storekeepers still use them, but they are terribly hurtful to the eye. This is because the intensity of the light is constantly changing, and this jumping of the blaze is much worse for the eye than the flicker of the gaslight I have had occasion to treat a great many pe jple for inflammation of the retina caused by the light of arc lamps." St. Louis Globe-Democr- at Imitating llralf. Daniel Dougherty, in his descriptions of the oratorical style of well-know- n members of parliament pictures Tim-othy M. Ileal', e, in this way. Dougherty throws back his coat-tail- s, thrusts his hands deep into his pockets, and assuming the accent and manner of the wild Hibernian, ex-claims: "Where did yez git the land? Where, I ax yez, did git it? Yez stoled it!" |
