Show ANIMAL INSTINCT the life of olio Is saved by another we have received tho following interesting narrative from a correspondent in greenock who thus writes A remarkable caso of live saving by a dog occurred last summer in greenock iu n timber pond attached to a sawmill saw mill alie strip of land upon which tho baw is built presents a frontage of about fifty yarda fo the public street and extends fully yarda toward the clyde two thirds of alio ground ia wet ground that is ground entirely covered by water when the tide is in three ide of this portion are by a betout paling through which iu closure the tide ebbs and flows the fourth side ia formed by a perpendicular embankment of four feet deep which also forms the nation of the dry ground the in closure or pond as it is called ia used for storing timber afloat at high water the floating timber and dry ground are nearly level and as at the time of the following incident the pond was packed with timber there seemed at high water to be little apparent difference between dry ground and wet ground for several days two does of tho bull terrier kind whose owners were at work in one or other ofilio adjoining shipyards were enjoying themselves in their masters absence by chasing each other in play rushing impetuously hither and thither sometimes along the street occasionally making a dart into the yard round about the sawmill saw mill and as suddenly disappearing again out to the street and up one of the many close at hand ono of these charges led to a rather sudden and somewhat disastrous termination if was high water at the gate of the baw mill premises rushed the two dogs the one close at the heels of the other across the yard and on to the floating timber one of them was soon made aware of the instability of its footing by its slipping into the water between two logs were floating a few inches apart the two logs between which the dog fell were floating on their corners and therefore formed a elope on each side like the letter V which caused the dog to slip back into the water at every effort to scramble on to the top side of its temporary tempo rory prison wall its more fortunate companion retreated to dry ground but on seeing the struggles of its friend it at once returned and by intelligent gestur tf invited it to terra firma the efforts of the unfortunate dog were of no avail still it persevered during which time the oilier had twice returned from and to dry land on the it seemed to grasp the situation for with its teeth it at once caught its submerged companion by the hack of the neck and assisted so effectually as to enable it to scramble out of the water and join in an other romp but not within sawmill premises they were never afterward eleu within the gate confining their fun to the streets on all subsequent occasions it may be of interest to note that it was a male dog which fell into the water tho other its rescuer was 0 f the gentler sex chambers journal |
