Show THE PEOPLE SAY A prominent citizen of osden pays a visit to the idaho penitentiary EDITOR HERALD while in boisa city a few days ago I 1 con eluded to pay a visit to bishop stuart with whom I 1 am well acquainted quain ted and the other prisoners iw hoare now working out their sen otence on the charge of unlawful cohabitation in the idaho penitentiary is situated about two and a half miles from boise I 1 walked out to the prison which is a largo rock building and was kindly received by warden norton alio has charge of the place I 1 was conducted to his office and bishop stuart was called in when wo had a long conversation in the course of which ho said that he and the other prisoners were being treated by of the prison as kindly as it was possible for them to do under the prison regulations their meals consist of white bread and boiled beef and potatoes three times a day and the cells in which they are confined are feet in size two prisoners are confined in each of these and one mormon and one other prisoner occupy a cell together but it was expected that the cormons mormons Mor mons would be put together which would maye their confinement a little more comfortable and less tedious they arc confined twenty three hours out of the twenty four per day thus only one hour is alloyed for exercise ex erciso which is hardly sufficient to guarantee good health to men who have been used to plenty of exercise and fresh air bishop stuart is detailed to do the chores around the prison to sweep out the offices and black the officers boots and do other small jobs everything is neat and scrupulously clean and no bad emalls could be discovered in any portion of the penitentiary the mormon prisoners seem happy and contented and realizing they are confined for the sake of truth and conscience they hope to conduro their term of confinement without very serious consequences to themselves the treatment received by them since their committal from marshal du bois and wardens richards and norton has been of an urbane character they said that while on the way from blackfoot to boise they were deft to themselves while those in charge occupied a separate car and another prisoner was ayen left in their charge this fellow attempted to escape but was recaptured by pursuers in whom so much trust had been confided on arriving at boise a hotel proprietor solicited patronage from those same men Bishop Stuart and others but they informed him tho marshal would provide food for them and his surprise eur prise at this information may be better imagined than described these men who have been incarcerated because they would not discard their wives and families and thus violate their consciences arc feeling cheerful and happy as those who er for the truths sake always have been WM DRIVER |
