Show A FRACAS the sail lake postmaster auditor ri wo take the following account ofa which took place in the salt lake post office yesterday morning from the deseret ay the aluch culminated m the row yesterday had their beginning in au occurrence that took place on monday june ast 1st on that day auditor N W clayton found it necessary to make a trip to ogden and was considerably pushed in attending bohia business preparatory to leaving having a large amount of mail ho gave quite of letters into the han ds of his clerk to open which the latter did among the number opened was one directed to charles E ingalls fiut the address was not noticed and the contents like those of the other letters were laid on the desk when all biad been done the money orders three in were taken by the clerk and laid aside the auditor at the same time looking over the letters when he picked up that for mr ingalls he saw that a letter belong ing to somebody else had been sent him from the post office and re placed it in which the clerk wrote opened by mistake box 1193 the number of the auditors box and returned it to the post office on mr chayton s return three orders were accepted and presented for payment the postmaster himself being present two paid but the third for mr lynch said was drawn in favor of Cli arles ingalla In galle and suggested that mr clayton his name as it was supposed the amount was in payment for bome recording and that it was probable made it payable to himself the auditor then in accordance with his suggestion wrote on the back of the order pay to N W clayton charles ingalls and received the money he then hurriedly tailed at hia office requested the clerk to trace up rethe order for came from and made his way to the depot where he took the train for ogden on tuesday he proceeded by train to prayo to attend to some official business without stopping in this city in the meantime the ingalls letter had been again placed in the auditors box time his clerk wrote over alie lascoe 1198 the number of the box to which the letter was addressed a large 8 to draw the postal clerks attention and again returned it ou friday morning shortly after mr clayton came to his office in hiir hooper eldredge block post master lynch inquired for him stating that ho had on a little unpleasant business the result of a misunderstanding and referred to the explaining that mr ingalla had called and was a little exercised over the matter mr clayton promptly handed the postmaster tho amount and the latter remarked that he had been be siegel by newspapers for information of a forgery by a high official mr clay ton stated that the whole affair had been a mistake easily made in view of the circumstances and that as there was nothing like the postmaster wrt to give the truth to the newspapers mr clayton then ifould mr ingalla and the explanation was of course entirely satisfactory to that gentleman and the matter passed off last monday the attention of mr clayton was called to an arti cle in sundays tribune wherein 0 o ia accused of forgery ho went to the paper ho was told the article in question waa published just as it was given to them by postmaster lynch but they would publish any statement mr clayton desired to make about the matter yesterday morning mr chayton went to ohp postoffice post office to have a money order cashed when mr lynch brought the subject up remarking got it britho paper some conversation ensued in regard to the truthfulness of the article mr chayton finally baying good aa article as I 1 could coming from a man who would defame innocent women aa vou have the postmaster responded calling tho A suitor a liar and the latter replied witha similar epithet at which lynch became BO enraged that lie seized an iron mailing stamp weighing about four pounds and threw mr CI at the same lime using most foul and blasphemous language and threats ening to kill ane objector object of his wrath the stamp struck the in low smashing several panes of lasa but mr clayton dodged it mr lynch then seized another stamp and reaching over one of the clerks hurled it through the opening unit mr claylon a heavy blow on the left arm the latter then seized the missile and raised it whereat hia cowardly assailant climbed behind one of the clerks for protection mr clayton then left the post office and entered a complaint in the police court against tho post roaster who was and gave bonda in the sum of for hia appearance for trial tah morning at ten it is said tho special postal agent was present when the row occurred yesterday and ho intends the matter haying telegraphed cast for instructions |
