An Authority on Sheep. This government official, who Is an authority on sheep and goats, unhesitatingly unhes-itatingly commends the selection of Ogden aa the place for a permanent sheep show, offering as It Joes a central point for the bringing together to-gether of seller and buyer, allowing tho owners of herdu In the great sheep states of Wyoming. Montana, New Mexico, Idaho, Nevada and Utah an excellent opportunity to Inspect the best sheep In the country at a minimum outlay In time and money. This government expert declarer that there are no finer rams In any part of the United States or Kurop4 than those now in the tented enclosures enclos-ures at the Fair Grounds, and this U ii broad statement, roming from a man who has been the Judge at fx of tho biggest sheep shows of the last three ears. including that of the Seattle oxiition. the Chicago Livestock Show, the Denver Fat Stock Show, the American Itoyal at Kansas City. The best stock avail-ablo avail-ablo Is here nnd there arc between 2,000 and 2,500 animals in the pens. There are Cotswolds, Lincoln, Dart mores, Shropshire, Hampshlres, Oxfords, Delaines. Read Bros., Is to he seen In the Ions; rows of slock pens uhich occupy the greater part of the southwest area of the Fair Grounds. ' (Continued on Page Eight.) -All wool and a yard wide" has become an axiom applied to thlng3 that aro purely genuine, and the phrase Is surely permissible In stating stat-ing the merits of the International Sheep Show and Auction Sales. So fine Id the exhibit and po nearly equal are the different breeds of blooded sheep that it would be unfair un-fair to select the Cotswold and say he Is finer than the Rarnboulllet or other breeds of sheep; it would re quire an expert to pass on the matter mat-ter of fineness. i It Id certain, though, that the best ' sheep of the world are on exhibition exhibi-tion in Ogden. The xheep anow Is of greater national Importance than any event held In Ogden since the meet Ing of the natloual Irrigation con gress, and It is of as great interna tloual Importance to the stockmen o the country as any event ever before be-fore held in America. This may be rather high sounding, but the statement comes from the men who have been iu attendance ' the sheepmen of the country will Ket here for tho auctions. "This Is surely a ro;it exhibition of sheep. The lipst I over saw; anil ! have soon thorn all. I have nttend-cd nttend-cd (ho big shocp shows of America and of the old world for tlio past 20 years, and I must confess thai th Is among iho best I have over seen. There can bo none hot tor. The finest fin-est sheep that aro raised are in these pens, and ihey are all foi ,;alc. This i" purely n great opportunity for the sheep raisers of the Intermountui'i country, ' which Is the groat shocp country of the United States, to select se-lect the pure bred sheep they need in their herds. Opden Is the place." E. F. .Maxcy of the Pino Hidgc-Stoek Hidgc-Stoek Karm of Salem, la., is here with 300 hoad of pure bred range sheep of the Shropshire ki.id lor sale. He states that his sheep arc-not arc-not on the show order, but that they are the fellow that the sheepmen need in their herds on the ranges. He will remain here until after the auction sales. A. A. Wool & Son-? or Saline, Mich., were at the Seattle exposition last year. .Mr. Wood states that be Is very much pleased with the Ogden show and feels I hat it is the best that has yet been held. Opden is tho place for the show, he nays, and li will not be taken elsewhere. The breeders will have to come to the sheep raiser and Ogden is the most central point fur I hem, Mr. Wood says, and he feels that no mistake was made in establishing headquarters headquar-ters here. Krnest Hobson of IMcrton, Charles Cook of Pine Dluff, Wyo., and others oth-ers who are here with pure bred sheep for exhibition and sale state that the show, the facilities for the show and the weather for the show are the best they have ever seen in all their experience in the show and sale business, bus-iness, and that the arrangements made by the management could nut be improved upon Guests of F. S. King. A number of the sheep exhibitors were guests of V. S- King at the Hermitage Her-mitage yesterday afternoon, where dinner was served and the pentlemen Indulged in much sheep talk. Mr. Fred W. Herrington, cbafrmau of the sheep show committee, was a puest, and he came in for considerable consider-able commendation. So much Pennine Penn-ine praise was given Fred that bis hash fulness was exhibited to the extent ex-tent that he suggested that it might be well to return to the show grounds and attend to further business in the matter of arranging for today s at fairs. The company was taken to the Hermitage in autos. greatest exhibitions in the United States, some of them .being prize winners in the old world , while at this show there arc hundreds of sheep that have been brought' here purely for sale. They are pure bred sheep, to be Mire, but they have not been groomed for the show business. They are not wearing their finest toggery, the result being that they detract somewhat from the general ' beauty or the field Ogden. the Permanent Market. Opden has been almost irrevocably fixed ns the annual inectlug place of the International sheep, raisers and purchasers, the sheep men declaring that there is no other logical place for it. The object of the show, in connection with the sale, is to bring the Hire bred sheep of the world to a point where it Is most convenient for the man who raises the sheep upon the hills and in the valleys of the mountains to see them and make their select Ion of bucks 'and ewe for their herds. It is also the purpose pur-pose or the show and sale to bring the raisers of pure bred sheep and the men who are turning herds of sheep Into commercial good together, thut they may exchange ideas and know more of the demands on the breeder and the flockmaster. The meetinp is being held in Ogden because be-cause it Is the center of the sheep raising industry of the country, and the breeders feel that It is imperative impera-tive that they come to the sheep raisers and let them see the puro bred stock that they must buy to improve their herds and get the most commercial good of them. Breeders Must Get in Line. It i3 said by some of the promineu sheepmen in Ogden that the breeder of fine sheep or the man who keeps j them on the thousand bills, who does not attend the international .sheep gathering. Is not up to dale in the business, and be will find sooner or later that he must get in line with the great show and sale. The westerner is particularly fortunate for-tunate to have the pure bred sheep brought to his very dcor for examination, exami-nation, fcr It enables him to see the sheep, all the pure breds. with but little expense and make the selection according to his judgmont. The raisers rais-ers of fine sheep in this convention at Ogden have come to the western man's own ground to sell him his sheep, and they are bringing to bim the best that nre raised In any country. coun-try. ..Ready for the Sales. Up to the present time the show-has show-has been a decided success, say the men who are here with sheep, and that it is possible that most of the sheep on exhibition will be sold at private sale before the first auction Jay, Sept. 2R. Many private sales have already been made at very fine figures, fig-ures, and the men who are selling state that the indications are that thev will have to come next year ' Men of National Reputation Have Praise For- the Exposition (Cortinued from Page Four.) Drawing Many Buyers. That the Sheep Show is drawing j buyers In large numbers was made I evident on the first day, when sheep owners from throe stales contract-;. contract-;. ed for 200 head of the finest breJ ! rains. j John Cannody of lender. Wyn., who is ac-ompanicd by A. Johnston, traveled fiOO niflos to be present. Au urgent message said he would return by the next train to be here for the first day of the auction, which commences com-mences Wednesday. Came to See; Remains to Buy. Henry Itaer of ' Millvllle. Cache county, came to see. 11c has re-I re-I nu inert to buy, declaring ll.at the display of blooded rams is beyond his expectations. William and Anton Jensen of Geneva, Ge-neva, Utah, are taking home with ' them several head of exhibition cheep. Chris Jewel oi Rock Springs. Wyo., l-s here lo buy and yesterday be was negotiating with several owners. Heavy Sales Looked for. The heavy sales are looked for with the arrival of large delegations of sheep owners from Nevada. Wyoming Wyo-ming and Idaho, who delayed coming until the show was well on and all herds in place at the exhibition, and the two owners of flocks totaling 4U.U00 head feel that they are well ewarded for their long trip. Some Early Purchasers. Wilson Bros, and Abraham Hjnven of Kiohfiold. Utah, were among tho lirtt purchasers and they are going home hiphly pleased. Wilson Uros. bought 0 Cotswolds. W. X. Mcfiill or Ely, Nov.. one of the big wool growers of the Sagebrush Sage-brush state, was called home by urgent ur-gent business, but will return Wed ua&day. Of the exhibitors of Cotswolds and Partnioros. John Rawlinps of Forest, Canada, has 5o0 head and they aro beautiful specimens of those breeds. In Rambouillets. A. A. Wood & Son oi Michigan. W. S Hanson of Collision. Col-lision. Utah, nutterfield Livestock company of Veis?r, Idaho, and F. S. King of Ogden have a display that makes clear why Rambouillets have made such headway in the west in the last 15 years. W. F. Reuk of Sun Prairie, Wis., is here with Harnpsbires and Shrop-shires, Shrop-shires, and in his group of wonderfully wonderful-ly develoied animals is the winner of the royal prize In England and an unbeaten Hampshire ram George McKcrrow & Son arc receiving re-ceiving congratulations on their Shropshires, Harnpsbires and Ox-lords. Ox-lords. Remarkable Lincolns. E. W. Patrick and Ernest Robertson Robert-son have a Canadian Importation of I Lincolns of remarkable quality. In addition to their Rambouillets the Rutterfield Livestock company have American Merinos and Delaines. It is this breed of sheep that Is now-being now-being exported to South Africa from this country and winning fame for Amei loan breeders. L. M. Hartley of Iowa has several hunJred head of sale Shropshire rams and his sheep are receiving the at tention of buyers. An Assured Success As an eastern visitor said, on viewing view-ing the great show: "This exhibition Is assured success suc-cess because the best stock in the world has been brought to the very doors of the western sheepmen, and, to paraphrase, the owners of herds are no longer tempted to buy by cat- a!ogue." J The sheep are here for iuspection. i and as a result ma:iy a she cp own- er, undecided in his purchases, will be led into buying a superior grade . of stork, which evonttia'ly will bring a rich reward in u higher grade of I range sheep. The stimulus t the ibeep Industry which this exhibition will give ran scarcely be estimated. Compared With Last January Show. I Some people who have visited the exhibition pens recently and who also saw t lie show here of last January, say that they can see no particular fl'i'ferenco between the sheep that j were shown at that lime and the ones ) to be seen now. The shf'Oi) brooders j and the floekmsisicrs say that this is true and that it is not true. At the fhow iu January borne of the best sheep of the whole world were in evidence, but I here w ere not nearly so iiKrny or thorn as there are at this vhow. And the sheep that were in Ogdcu then were all show sheep and had taken prizes in some of the with more sheep. The western sheepman sheep-man has his eye open to the advantages advan-tages of the show, and all who need blooded sheep are here "rubbering around'' and looking for bargains. Chairman Herrington says there are a good many of the sheepmen of the west In the city who do not make themselves known to the fellows fel-lows ,who have sheep for sale, until they get a pretty good line on the sheep, and the prices that are being asked ror them. "There is this much about It, though.'' said Mr. Herrington; "a goo 1 many of the sheepmen or the country coun-try will keep away irom the show until un-til the first auction day, when, they will bud that many o! iiie sheep they would like to get have been sold. We are not to blame for tnat, though; the sheep are here and we have done the best we could to get the best cheep in the world here for them. If they overlook any beLs it Is not our fault.'' Well Known Auctioneer Engaged. Dwight Lincoln or Mllford Confer. Ohio, has been engaged at a high salary to auction df the sheep Sept. 28 and 2:t, he being recognized as the most expert stock auctioneer in the United States. Mr. Lincoln Is secretary of the Rambouillet Assori-atlon Assori-atlon of America and he has been auctioneering sheep for the past 3n years. Ho is on the ground at this time and Is ready for business, lie states that he is surprised at the possibilities of the International Sheep Show, permanently established at Ogden, and be wonders why Ogden has not been thought of before. "Ogden is the most ideal spot on earth for the International Sheep Show and sale," h, said "and it must be recognized as the place hereafter where the growers and breeders shall .get together to make their bargains and swap sheep stories. The sheepmen sheep-men must see the sheep in orjer to make tho best selections for his herd, a.-id that is what the show and sale was established for. I hope all |
