Show ARTHUR BROWN GIVEHSENTENCE Salt Lake, April G. Arthur nrown, well known about town and several times tried for tho same offense, received re-ceived a sentence of two and a half years In the state prison at hard labor la-bor for forgery this morning by Judga T. D. Lewis of the district ourt. Motion for a new trial by bU ounsel. Judge O. W. Powers, was pverruled, but a stay f execution vii granted and a certificate of probable prob-able cause signed by the Judge that the case may bo taken to the supreme su-preme court. In the meantime Brown will go free on his own recognizance, at bo has been ever since prosecutions prosecu-tions against him were started. I do not b-lieve, b-lieve, thero Is criminal Intent In what he ha done, but I confess I cannot understand his mental condition. He Las never been a vicious or bad young man In any sense of the word, but neither I nT anyone, who knows him has ever been able to account for hU mental condition and at one time tho supreme court had no hesitation 1n pronouncing the evidence sufficient suffi-cient to find blm Insane. Tho district attorney agreed that Brown might be suffering from some mental Incapacity, but argued that he was sufficiently responsible for his acts to merit punishment and he he. lU-ved that such should be Insisted upon. Judge. Lewis said he took these things Into consideration. He asked Brown If he had anything to say and cm receiving a negative reply passed sentence. |
