Th beginning begin-ning of tho second week of the strike, against I he Philadelphia Rapid Transit Tran-sit company finds the city authorities apprehensive of what today and tomorrow to-morrow niay develop, in spite of the progress toward tho re-establlhment order nnde In th'? last two days. Today is a half holiday In many of the Industrial plants whose employes are strongly in uympaths' with tho strikers, and last Sunday proved to be tho hardest day on the police of any during the strike. The arrest of John J. Murphy, the young president of tho Central Labor union, on the charge of inciting to riot, has added to the uneasiness in labor circles. The warrant for Murphy's Mur-phy's arrest was Issued by the direc-, direc-, lion of Director of Public Safety Clay, : following the publication In tho afternoon after-noon papers of the following statement state-ment said to have been made by the. head of the Central Labor union: "You cau depend upon It that by Sunday's meeting a general strike will be called. If one man is shot In Kensington Ken-sington thero will follow a carnival of riot and bloodshed which, will startle the entire country. "I should not care to be responsible for such an outbreak. The state po-lleo po-lleo would bo helpless: I want It understood un-derstood that th-.Me are men in tbo northeast who can shoot as straight as any troopers ever drew breath. Just wait a little while for developments and yon will sec something which will open your eyes." Murphy denied that ho had made such a statement for publication. Ho says ho merely expressed an opinion ns to what might develop, If the strike continued. Unlike Pratt, who was denied ball when arrested on a similar chargo a few daya ago, Murphy was permitted to enter ball before a friendly magistrate magis-trate for his hearing today. The fiat refusal of the board of directors di-rectors of the Rapid Transit company to eutertain a proposition of arbitration arbitra-tion leads many to believe that tho contest between the company and the union will continue until one or the other surredT?. 1 Yesterday there was no noticeable change in the early hours of the day of the matter of sfmct car facilities. They were operated under protection on nearly all lines. President Murphy says be. fully expected ex-pected the central body at its regular meeting tomorrow to endorse such a move. He would not predict whether all trades unions lu the city would join In a walkout. |
