Show First Shipments to the East Found to Discolor Within a Few Hours i Pioneer Fruit Company Issues a Warning j to the Fruit Growers. The Pioneer Fruit company, with headquarters in Ogden, today issued a statement to the effect that the discovery dis-covery has been made that Utah cherries, cher-ries, from trees which have been excessively ex-cessively irrigated, do not make soo.l shippers, and. as a consequence, the llrst shipments from this section to the eas,t have proved somewhat dls- appointing. i In a statement to this paper, the local manager of tbe Pioneer Fruit company said. "By discovery, made by Mr. White, manager of the Ogien Fruit Growers' association., on cherries, particularly Napoleons and Centennials, wo are afraid we axe going to get .bad reports re-ports from the east, and the growers may r:s well know It first as last. "We had anticipated fancy prices, as our cherries looked beautiful when wo were packing them; but the manager man-ager went down to the Ogden warehouse, ware-house, and Mr. White had what he thought were the nicest he put up this year, and invited the manager out In L'ie car to see them. We were 1 both dumbfounled to notice that practically prac-tically one-third of the top layer, where they ore supposed to put the f.in.ty cherries, were badly discolored! We noticed on the other cars coming from ' Brigham this saniei cherr showed this same discoloration, and were calling Mr. Valentine down for being so careless in putting them In the box, when oother case Tame in from Mr. McGrlff, in a lot of the sanio kind of cherry, and he would not believe be-lieve us when we telephoned him that they were .not fit to go In tbe car. "PJt now we see tbe reason "for It. I There Is too much Irrigation. We find that orchardlats have irrigated very heavily here. I remember that they give very little Irrigation to cherries In California, some localities none at all, and this is tbe only way we can account for the poor keeping qualities of local cherries. "Wlien a cherry like Mr. White, packed yesterday goes down in one night, we are fearful of the results, as wo have a car due to sell In Chicago today and are anxiously awaiting the telegram. "Utah growers have - learned a whole lot the last year. but. evidently, this was something that was overlooked over-looked They always complained about their cherries .not carrying by express I presume this has been their first experience jn car lots, so they did not apply the right reason to the keeping qualities." |
