Show tempted, perhaps fallen, girl to a place of refuge. Do you know that (the Salvation Army takes the girl to the rescue, home, teaches her rcliKl"n and when she has accepted Christ j and has been taught self-control and self-support, she Is then placed with a good Christian family and looked . after for years? I If, instead of two or three Salvation Army girls, laboring to give the fall-' fall-' en a future home, the W. C. T. IT. and all good women should aid in this work. Is there any doubt that the reward re-ward would be great? What Is the answer of the fallen girl, when some one tries to persuade her to leave the life of shame? Here Is the answer of four out of five that were requested to change Ihelr present pres-ent life: "It'B no use. Bvory woman is against us and, if we try to hide our past, some one will give us away, and we will be driven from one place to another and then hack here again." This paper did not ask "why men should be called upon to cleanse the city from such crime " We asked, "Why ask men to do that, while woman wo-man will not aid her fallen sister " This paper did not blame good "women "wo-men for present conditions." We did. however, blame good women ' for tho hopelessness of the lost girl." It would be well for our critics to quote us fully and correctly and then tbpre will be no chance for a misunderstanding. misun-derstanding. We reproduce this picture again today to-day with the exact words. There is . no excuse for anyone to feel offend-I offend-I cd at what we say, as every one I knows what Is said under the picture Is true Of course, those who hae j rushed Into print In an effort to fast-, fast-, en on others the responsibility of present conditions way feci chagrined j to have the tables turned, but then I these members of the W. C. T. U. ! committee on publicity probably have j been disappointed before. This paper has been fair to the wo- men of the W. C. T. IT. For years we have given them a free department In 1 the Sunday and Saturday Standard. We have never curtailed or blue penciled pen-ciled their manuscript- It was always al-ways published as presented. Time, and again the temperance department depart-ment cast reflections on this paper and Its editor and manager. Some of the articles were quite raw. some without any foundation whatever, but we allowed the matter to pass unnoticed as we knew the Intentions of the committee was good and that some one had deceived the members But when the ladies of the W. C. T. U print resolutions, charging a condition con-dition -of affairs purely Imaginary, they must not feel offended If they are criticised. For Instance, the publisher of this paper Ik the executive head of Og-den. Og-den. For lite ladles of the W. C T. U. to charge him with entering "Into a partnership with a degraded woman wo-man who traffics in the virtues of ber elstera," Is to aspert that which la not true. It may be the mayor does j net see his duties as some people would like him to see then, but that i Is nu Justification for ch.v.lng him j with a most heinous oifense. It may be that we are too sensitive on this subject where responr;!b".ity I "4 being fixed, but not any more so thnn our W C. T. U. sisters appear to be since the publication of the "White Slave" picture We must admit that Mrs. Cral; writes an able article and asks some pointed questions which we are nut prepared to answer. It all shows that the question is as live today a3 It was when Christ wai on earth It was even a living Irfsue In the lavs of King Solomon, and has been a burning burn-ing Issue In all Christian laud in all centuries. We wish the city government govern-ment of Ogden could settle it: we wish the W. C. T. U could wipe out the social evil We wish there was no such thing. Rut well what is the remedy that will plve Hie lost girl an equal chance with the fallen man? You take the fallen man to your home, why not the girl? DEFENSE Of THE WOMEN 0FH.U Editor Standard. In the Issue of your paper on Friday last, you were pleased to censure all women In general gene-ral and W. C T. U. members In particular par-ticular lor what you termed th "Hopelessness of Fallen Women." You ask why men are called upon to cleanse this city from this source of crime, degradation, debauchery and contagion. And again you Inquire In regard to the use of the means Christ has given woman to assist In reclaiming re-claiming tho outcast In reply to your accusation of blame for the condition mentioned, allow me to say that facts, which you could have learned had you so desired, will not bear out our charge of unckarltablcness or lack of sympathy on the part of women for the erring or unfortunate. The ! Salvation Army lass deserves all the praise you have given ber. God speed bor in her labor of love, Sho Is not ; the only one, however, who Is giving her life to the call of needy humanity. Hundreds of women of different organizations or-ganizations and separate creeds, many j of them. I am glad to say, wearing the white ribbon, know no other aim in 1 life but to rescue those In danger, j strengthen the weak, uplift the fall- ' en and educate the iguorant Hound J by centuries of repression and sup- ; pression, hampered by responsiblll- ' ties that draw upon her heart, handl- , capped by lack of knowledge of matters mat-ters of law, and the conduct of pub- i lie business, with the prejudice of , the masses against her, scorned by those whom she sought to better, misunderstood and maligned, woman has borne It all patiently, trusting that the Christ she honored In her j service, would Justify her In his own good time, by crowning her efforts, in behalf of the uplifting of her sex, ! with success, j Now, Mr. Editor, I could rill your ; paper with facts proving my state- , monts. Let one suffice. I will take the work of the W. C. T. 17. women ' In the matter of the "age of con sent." Some state legislatures, in their manly efforts to protect the weak, had placed the aje at seven 1 years at which a girl could sell her person Into the hands of a brute In 1 man's form and her physical and nmr- 1 al ruin had no redress in law. On the other hand a man under twenty-one twenty-one years of a?c could not legally sell 1 a dog. All states were not so ex- ( treme as this, the 'age" ranging ! from eight to fourteen years, giving no protection to the girl and placing ; tho man on vautage ground. Thp W. I C. T. 17. have succeeded, by hard i work, caused by the opposition of legislators. In having the protected j age for the girl placed at from six-tern six-tern to eighteen years. The boy, how ever, Is still protected until he is twenty-one. I You ask why we call upon men to ' drive crime from Electric Alley. We answer, first, he Is charged with tho .' execution of the law which forbids the j traffic carried on there; second, he is ! responsible for the condition that "exists "ex-ists there. It being the direct e- pult of his nets; third the city officials offi-cials break their oath of otflce In affording af-fording protection to the "Alley'9" unlawful un-lawful business 3iid In aiding and abetting the same. We, therefore, call upon Hum to cleanse Electric Alley of Its undesirable undesir-able element, lining persuaded that Its traffic debauches more boys and . girls thau all other sources of evil , combined, not excepting the paloon. ' which, however, goes hand In-hand j with It. Why should we be called unchir- ltable In demanding the expulsion of Belle Loudon and others like her from our city, If they will nt cease to be criminals. Il yeeins to me that the feeling that Inspired the accusation accusa-tion was a "sentimentality." which Roosevelt says "1j the mot broken reed on which righteousness can lean." You ask, would you take those erring err-ing ones Into your houses and care for them? Mr, Editor, would you allow al-low jour wife to do it, and would their presence In your home be desirable? de-sirable? All homes are not so arranged as to make thHt possible. I have known women of large heart and generous purpose to do so successfully, even giving up their own room and bed to the unfortunate, but. In the average home this Is Impossible, and not desirable. de-sirable. There Is a "hme," however, In Ogden where those who wish to leavo a life of hhame can be protected protect-ed and cared for until they can provide pro-vide for themselves. Responsible women wo-men compose the "hoard" who will reat the pirl like daughters and pledge theniselveri to do their utmost ut-most to aspisr them In making their future life what the past, under different dif-ferent Influences, might have born. Now, you cannot but agree that this vicious monster has the world In Its grasp. What is the principal cause of Its existence? What has nourished nour-ished It and helped to fasten Its slimy tentacles nu tho social life of today.' Is it wrong for those who suffer most by It, to demand Its removal by the sex which Is accountable fur lis life and stay umong us? Remember, Mr. Editor, It was a mail's nrm that was grasped by the lass In the blue bonnet. Respectfully, (Signed) W. I Craig, Tres. W C. T. U. Yes, My Dear Mrs. Craig.
