Show INSPECTOR SMYTH DENIES STORY Traveling Car Inspector Smyth of the Harriman system, called at Standard Stand-ard office Wednesday afternoon to say that he had been misrepresented by" those quoted in several newspapers bv the assertion that he had recommended recom-mended the discharge of white men employed as car cleaners at Ogden and the employment of Japanese In their places. To a reporter Mr. Smyth said: "I want to go on rocoid as denying the story that I ever even thought of recommending that white men be discharged dis-charged In order to give work to any Japs.' My sentiments are quite the reverse, and in fact I have recommended recom-mended on one occasion the dismissal of a crew of nine Japs and the em- i ployment of white men in their places. I I don't know where the story published publish-ed originated, but I Ish the Standard would deny It, and state. that there was no intention on the part of the company com-pany or any of its officials. to discriminate discrimi-nate In this, way against white men. It has never been done in the past that I know of and will not bo done in the future if I can prevent It. The story Is an Injustice to me and I want to be 6et right In the matter before tho people peo-ple of Ogden." |
