The Record-Herald today In a news article says that the beginning of the end of South Water street as the greatest fruit and vegetable market in the world has been signalized by tho announcement that the last deal virtually has been closed in a 510,000,000 real estate transaction which will give Chicago a large new produce market just south of the loop district The announcement, too, solves Chicago's Chi-cago's greatest real estate mystery. For years ago there has been persist- ! ent buying through brokers of land in I the vicinity of the site for the new market. Real eBtate men have puzzled puz-zled over the motive without gaining the slightest clew. .Supervision of the purchase of this site was intrusted to W. B. Jansen. I fourth vice president of the Santa Fe railroad. President B. F. Winchel of the Rock Island railroad, also, interested, inter-ested, is in New York and it la believed believ-ed that dotalls regarding the future of the project wfll be announced when he returned. Although the official announcement has not yet been given out, it is believed be-lieved that officials of tho Wabash, ' Rock Island, Santa Fe Panhandle, and Western Indiana lines will be found to be actively interested iu the success ot the venture. |
