Show ANNUAL TOURNAMENT OF TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP OPENS Pnlladelphia. June 21. Ideal weather weath-er favors the opening this afternoon of the annual tournament of the tennis championship of the United States in women's singles, doubles and mixed doubles on the courts of the Philadel phia Cricket club at Chestnut Hill. While the number of contestants is nor. as large as last year, the quality of tho entrants as a whole is exceptionally excep-tionally good, and high class tenuis Is looked for during the week. The greatest interest is centered in Miss Uotchkiss of California, who possesses pos-sesses a reputation on the Pacific coast second only to that of Miss May Sutton, by whom she was defeated last year for the Pacific championship. Among the other entran's are Mls Louise. Hammond, the metropolitan champion; Miss 1iuIsc Moves of Toronto, To-ronto, who reached the final round In tho international tournament at Niagara, Ni-agara, on the lako last year; Miss Edith Roche of Boston, holder of the. mixed doubles championship with N. W. Niles and Miss Gwendolonc Roes. St. Paul. Minn. Mrs. Barge Walkerch, the present national champion, will be unable to defend her title because of 111 health. |
