John Doe Chase, the weariest of the many weary ones who haunt tho streets of the city with nothing to do and who are periodically presented in court to account for their shortcom- ings, was arraigned on the charge of vagrancy. The old man drew himself up haughtily rind entered a gruff plea of not guilty. The spectators smiled, and the court, upon being Informed that the arresting officer was not present, pres-ent, inquired if any of the other officers offi-cers could handle the case. None volunteered vol-unteered and the judge ordered Chase presented at a special session this afternoon. James Martin forfeited bail to the amount of $5 on the charge of drunk enness. K. Yamada forfeited a similar sum for having violated the big ordinance by riding upon the sidewalk. Mrs. Edna Forrest, the colored dam-pel dam-pel who provoked a bit of excitement Friday afternoon b . "lifting" two silk skirts from the store of John McCre-ady, McCre-ady, did not appear in court, although the bonds which she was released upon up-on amounted to $50. It was evident that the woman considered her time to be more valuable out of Jail than on the Inside, and so her bail was declared de-clared forfeited. Mark Murphy was charged with driving a horse "furiously and Immoderately" Immod-erately" upon Washington avenue between be-tween Eleventh and Twelfth streets, Friday evening. The defendant did not. appear, but upon the receipt of $5 ball money bv messenger, the court announced Itself satisfied and the incident in-cident was closed. Gregor Cicale. charged in Friday's court with the theft of 50 feet of garden gar-den hose and a quantity of other plunder taken from thV Oregon Short Line company in the vicinity of the railroad yards, did not appear for trial. His ball had been fixed at $50 and it was expected that Gregor would be present to explain his annexation of the property. No ono seemed ready to explain for him, and the court reluctantly reluc-tantly declared the ball forfeited. |
