Show LEGAL QUESTION IS RAISED IN ROME Rome, March 14. The question has been lalsed In Rome as to whether the United States Is entitled to special satisfaction from tho Italian government govern-ment on account of the murder of Lieutenant Petroslno, of tho New York police department, at Palermo. While the nature of the crime was such as to stir the hearts of all the people, go eminent officials point out that only the diplomatic and consular bodies are under the special protection of tho government. Petroslno did not come under this head, but was in the tame category as any American citizen citi-zen abroad contemplated in the treaty between Italy and the United States, concluded February' 26, 1871, and being be-ing that the subjects of each country shall enjoy the same protection and security for their persons and property as nalies. The American ambassador has mado further representations to the foreign office, setting forth the imperative necessity ne-cessity for the protection of both Italians Ital-ians and Americans of bringing the assassins of Petroslno to justice. The foreign office officials assured hira that overythlng possible was being done by the Italian government and promised prom-ised that he should be kept Informed ot all developments. The general inspector in-spector of police has already proceeded proceed-ed to Palermo to make a full investigation investi-gation and Ui government, ln addition to leaving nothing untried to discover the criminals, has offered largo Towards To-wards for their capture. |
