Show CONFESSED MURDER OF CONTOS VEKOS IN A DEPRESSED FRAME OF MIND. Early Hearing of Case Will Bo Had Defendant Tells Story of Pursuit Pur-suit and Capture. After being landed in Jail yesterday afternoon, Nick Vekos, tho confessed murderer of John Contos, lapsed into a deep sleep that was much neoded and no one was permitted to see him, not even the newspaper men. Ho did not awaken from the sleep until late In the evening and when he did he seemed to be in a depressed frame of I mind. He had been complotely stripped of the clothing he wore Immediately Im-mediately following his arrest, heace there was no possible chance for him to conceal about his person any sort of weapon by which he could take his own life. Itis very natural that the officers of-ficers Bhould guard against the possibility possi-bility of his self-destruct ton, because It had been generally understood that the man would kill himself before bo would face tho awful chargo that confronts con-fronts him. Vekos seemed to be completely worn out by the maddened rush he had made during Sunday and yesterday to gain his liberty. He appeared to be in a very penitent mood when ho awoko from his sleep, quite thoroughly thorough-ly realising the great wrong ho had done Every precaution will be taken by Sheriff Wilson and his deputies not only against the possibility of self-destruction self-destruction on tho part of the prisoner, pris-oner, but he will also te guarded against ;,'the Intrusions of curious ones who may 'desire to see the man and talk with him. Detective Pendor stated laat evening even-ing that the man had made a frank and full confession of the horrible ar-fair ar-fair and that he ought to be left alone with his own thoughts and be given the opportunirvfor repentance- If repentance re-pentance will avail blm anything now. "We are mighty glad to have captured cap-tured the fellow without losing the lives of any of the men who were engaged en-gaged In the pursuit of him. We kept him in the clear when we came across ' him EOf, that no opportunity would be given him of getting Into a building of any sort where ho would have a decided advantage over the officers in case ho resisted arrest. Vekos was as meek as a lamb when we placed the' muzzles of our guns upon him and he offered no resistance whatever." Vekos, while on his way to Ogden with the officers In the automobile, told how near the officers came to getting get-ting him In the chase across the country coun-try between the Ogden Canyon Sanitarium Sani-tarium and the south part of the city, on Sunday. He sold he kept close to the hills because the country was very rough there and it gave him a good opportunity to conceal himself from the view ot the pursuing parly, and yet have them in view. In one instance, ho said, when the mm after him came alarmingly close he crawled into a cave in the rocks; at another time he concealed himself behind a huge boulder while the man hunters passed along within only a few yards of him, and again ho hjd in a deep ravine while the hunting party moved on in search for him. But he could not stand that sort of chase very long; he, was without food or water, which meant that he would have to return to the city where he might possibly procure these. He said he passed .beyond the southern limits of tho city, near to tho Weber river, when he concluded to return and seek shelter. He found the shelter, shel-ter, such as it was, in the barn of Mr. Pace, on Pacific avenue and Thirtieth street Vekoe will be charged with the crime of murder in the first degree, but the time of the filing of the qomplalnt has not yet been fixed He will be given rime to rest up and get legal counsel to defend him. The complaint will be filed In the municipal court, where he will be given a hearing. If he Is committed com-mitted to the district court for trial, an Information, charging him with the crime tho district attorney concludes he should be charged with under the testimony adduced in the lower court, will be filed, after which the man will be brought beforo the district court for trial. |
