Michigan had a slight edge on the Illinois nine and appeared to be an easy winner until Btahl, who was catching for Illinois, drove the ball high over tho center-fielder's center-fielder's head Into the branches of a young elm tree growing at the north end of what Is now the football field ! The bases were full at the time. Since then the tree hus been .artfully pre-' served by students and is known as Jake StahPs tree.
