Show I ROCKEFELLER'S FIRST JOB. On Tuesday John D. Rockeller observed ob-served his first Job anniversary. Sixty-seven years ago the man, who Is now 83 years of age and is reputed to bo the -wealthiest man in the world, obtained employment as a boy. Searching for a job six weeks, the boy at last t succeeded In obtaining work He uas not discouraged during the search and had no fear of obstacles. obsta-cles. He was paid about 50 cents a day, and with that small beginning he laid the foundation on which his hugo fortune was established. The lesson to young America is that there are no heights to which the average av-erage boy in this country cannot as- Iec-nd, either in business or pontics. Rockefeller started at the bottom and worked his way up. No doubt as a boy he saved his money, learned frugality, fru-gality, studied to improve himself, was devoted to his work and dreamed of great achievements. With those qualities he built until his wealth is so great as to be beond the dream of avarice. He has given to public Instl-utions Instl-utions hundreds of millions oi dollars and how much lie has left no one knows He is so powerful financially as to be able to shake the Industrial pillars of this nation. His mr.ndate is almost law. He has too much powoi for one man, although it Is not i harged that he has abused that pow- or beyond doing the things that made ior monopolv. Some day we may have a Rockefeller with whims and grouches to inflict on the American people. We may havo one who is a tyrant by choice. Then wealth beond rhe possessions of Croesus will be destructive de-structive to the peace of the nation.: |
