Show SUPREME COURT DEFENSE ASKED Former Justice Clarke Asks Bar to Help Fight Criticism CLEVELAND, O, Sept 27. (By the Associated I'ress. ) Associate Justice Jus-tice John H. Clark" of the United States supreme court, in his first public nddross since his resignation from the nation's highest tribunal, before be-fore members of the Cleveland Bar association as-sociation here Tuesday, called on all members of the bar to Join in his effort ef-fort and defense of tho national supremo su-premo court against what he termed "tho presi-nt period of criticism." JUStiC Clarke, who announced In his letter of resignation that he Intended In-tended to devote much of his leisure time to campaigning for the league of nations participated in by the United States, did not mention the league in his address. "It Is not for me to eulogize the United States supremo court " Justice Clarke said "I believe It Is more firmly embodied in tho affections of the people of tho United States than ever, and because there is criticism of It, I urge the people not to be discouraged dis-couraged or the lawyers to be afraid. "History shows that beginning in 1 799 the supreme court entered a fire I of partisan criticism lasting for ears. one never excelled, in which the leaders lead-ers of the country, for a generation, took sides Then the court merged more firmly Intrenched than ever in the minds of the people. "Notwithstanding the criticism from various parts of our country, coming from social and from political sources. I believe the people of the United States realize it Is a pillar of our national government and the keystone key-stone ut our political fabric. "Free government is more complicated compli-cated than any other. Its form In our country, with our local, state and national na-tional divisions, Is the most complicated compli-cated system ever devised in the history his-tory of mankind and it will not work automatically nor by chanco. It will work only by Intelligent voters voting Intelligent ballots "The problem that calls to us is to see whether it Is possible to change It High time we heeded this call! General disrespect for law a general feeling of unrest and discontent tho breaking up of our electorate into groups and blocs every man seeking for himself alone, nnd no man thinking think-ing of the country this confronts the bar of Ohio and the United Statea tonight. to-night. "There never was a time when tho bar of Ohio and tho nation offered as much to its profession, npr the accompanying accom-panying responsibility so great. I believe be-lieve tho bar of our state and country ia equal to it, but I firmly believe that unless we act at once all will fall into confusion. Eternal vigilance Is tho price of liberty.' |
