Show 1 1 KJ NEW TARIFF IS PRESENTED Due to the existence of the farm j bloc headed t. Senator Gooding of j Idaho, western agricultural Interests have been well cared for in the tarifl bill presented t- the United SI senate on Tuesday. There are a few items not up to the expectations of the western men. A Washington dispatch says: The farm bloc on the whole is well pleased with the bill, but on those items where rates were not raised to 1 tho figures asked, amendments are to ( be offered in the senate. Among those ; will be an amendment advancing the ! duty on Cuban sugar from 11.90 to 12 per hundred pounds. Another amend I ment will propose a rate of 6 cents, instead in-stead of 4, on dried hides; a duty of I cent a pound will be fought for on manganese and restoration of the 35-i 35-i ent duty1 on quicksilver will be .-ought. A fight will also be mad j to get back the house rate of $4 on 1 hay and Increased rates will be sought on clover and timothy seed. The bloc j also will ask for restoration of the I houso rate of 50 cents a thousand on J ; shingles." The big thing in this tariff readjust- j ment is to see to it that the west is not overlooked to the advantage of the; manufacturing east. The New England Eng-land politicians are deeply concerned over the schedules affecting manufactured manufac-tured articles, and Ibey are not inter ested in agriculture. With a solid front, tho farm bloc is able to insist 1 on a fairer application of tariff du- I ties than willingly would be accorded j by the eastern senators and congress men. The big fight will be on sugar. The western interests are demanding a I duty of S2 instead of the $1.60 written I into the present bill. There is a fair prospect of the higher duty being oh- tained. If It is, tho beet sugar In- J ; dustry will face a period of prosper- i ity. With higher agricultural and manu factoring tariff schedules, the general level of prices in tho United Stale may move upward instead of down ' ward. Then will come the question of , wages Involved in the cost of living. I |
