Goshen, pastor of the First Congregational church declared, "America "Am-erica is suffering from a disease brought on by cowardice and hyoc-' hyoc-' risy. Our business men generally are j cowards, afraid to say or do anything any-thing that is outside the beaten path. The general tendency is to try o please evorybod by not saing or doing do-ing anything that will displease an -body." Mr Goshen criticized the prohibition prohibi-tion law and the antl-cigaret law and others, declaring that these laws were causing the people to hold all luws in disrespect throughout the country He declared that all of the clubs of Salt Iake. while they were serving I good end In the good fellowship luncheons lunch-eons had done nothing distinctive din ing tho last year. He said they had done nothing that could not have been done without them. "We had a legislature on the hill here in Utah that could not pass civil government examinations and the members of that body passed laws th:.t have made ua the lauphlng stock of the country." Dr Goshen said, "We cannot make a Sunday si hool out of this country You have been trying with prohibition and. instead of 2 saloons you have about -100 in Salt Lake City The use of opium and narcotics has increased about 300 per cent during the last ten years " Mr Goshen deplored the saloon and said he always had opposed It. He favored the national control of the making of wines and beer, he said, in order to turn wh it he termed the present pres-ent condition of disorder, debauch and intemperance Into real temperance. oo |
