These sets wore erected on a lot behind the studio, stu-dio, and to provide more realistic effects, ef-fects, they were burned at night- Because of their size the sets were erected one at a time .and the company, com-pany, including many children, who played Inmates of the orphanage, WOrkl d ihrough two entire nights. In the Interior scenes, in which the "Duchess Of .Towers," played by Elsie Ferguson, succumbs to the flames, parts of the woodwork and furniture were soaked with gasoline. The long Island fire authorities had been notified noti-fied In advance of the pre-arranged conflagraUon, and had Issued a permit, per-mit, but city firemen were at hand to prevent the blaze from getting beyond control. in the exterior scenes, the fire apparatus ap-paratus of sixty years ago, is drawn lo the burning building by firemen in : the queer costumes of that day. An additional corps of watchmen ! was obtained by the studio to keep the sightseers off the lot while these i scenes were made. Hundreds of residents re-sidents of the neighborhood watched I the blaze. |
