Show SOLON TAKES UP CUDGEL FOR POOR CONSUMER llf ASHINGTON Jan. 8. A plea W consideration :r the ul timate consumer was inado today by Senator Thomas. Democrat, Colorado, before the senate fin-unco fin-unco committee which Is holding hearings on the house emergency tariff bill designed to protect the farmers. "It strikes mc." said Senator Thomas that some consideration ought to bo glv-n the consumer. "Everybody comes here appealing for help. Everybody ls in a bad fix. But the result is always the same stick the consumer." K. D. Loos, appearing on behalf of California lemon growers, had asked for a tariff of two centj a pound on lemons. Senator Thomas Tho-mas inquired whether, if this rato , was fixed, tho growers would not develop a monopoly as a result Of barring alien lemons. The witness Insisted no such effect could be expected, explaining that I more lemons were now stored hero than at any time in ten years. "Thai may be true," said tho senator, "but that ls a fine example exam-ple of what is being asked of congress con-gress everybody who has something some-thing to sell is seeking to exploit those who have to buy. "Some may need relief, but so does the consumer. If the relief you seek is granted and this applies not only to the lemon Industry, In-dustry, but to all Industries the pecuniary relief comes out of the consumer "Why, the only things the eon- , Burner can buy cheaply now," he added, "are cork screws and postage post-age Ntamps. and ho has no need for cork screws." oo |
