Born In Ireland, he was educated in Glasgow and obtained a scholarship in Oxford. In his early career he practiced prac-ticed law In London. Then he entered en-tered parliament and later became an author of world wide rarae His work. 'The American Commonwealth," It used as a text book In our schools, so keen was the author's understanding of the American form of government and the spirit of this country. He was one of the men with Gladstone, Glad-stone, urging home rule for Ireland, and up to the last struggled to give to the Irish self-determination. When 83 years of age, he published a two-volume book. 'Democracy," in which he devoted much space to America, briuglng out some of the weaknesses of our party politics-. During the war. Lord Bryce was a tower of strength in defending the side of the allies and in condemning the ruthlessnesB ol the enemy, and when the war was over he declared that the terms of peace would bo Incomplete In-complete if Turkey, the maker of wars . and the fiendish slayer of Armenians, was not driven from Europe. The world of letters and of justice 1 will miss Lord Bryce. |
