Show FRUITGROWERS OF WEST APPEAL FOR LOWER RAIL RATES CHICAGO, Jan, IT. A committer commit-ter of seven men, appointed by William D. Stephens, governor of California, to represent thp lO.uOO fruit and vegetable growers, of his slate, met with railway executives here today to discuss the return of freight rates and schedules to a pre-war basis. "If the fruit and vegetable industry in-dustry in California Is to survive, rates and schedules of freight must be rcdui ed ' said C. K Vir-den. Vir-den. chairman of th governor's committee. "In my state the farmers are plowing UP then lettuce fields and giving away their fruit because the freight rates consume all possibility possibil-ity of profit." A. G Wells, vice president of the Atchison. Topeka & Santa Fe railroad, who Is chaliman of the railway executive, said that they would probably come to some decision de-cision today and then report to the growers. |
