centre ol 01 which i DELICIOUS SODA WATER rises and flows into saja creek only a few feet away here and there in the streets tho same kind of water issues from many springs some im proved by the labor of man and others just as nature formed them get ing into a carriage a short drive takes us over a plain formed by de posits from mineral waters where now and then the hollow sound indicates caverns beneath but we drive on and soon reach ninety per cent and partake of what many consider THE BEST OF ALL and surely in taste and effect upon our system we deem it such driving off in another direction hooper springs are reached where great bodies of water come to the surface and find their way into creek a stream some five or six miles long and supplied entirely by springs this stream carries a large quantity of water and the many trout in it af ford FINE which is greatly enjoyed by visitors there hooper springs yield the best water for shipping purposes ami mr E T williams ua already built up quite a trade in bottling and shipping driving on farther the great formation is reached and we meet a new surprise in the extent and becu liari ties of these springs issuing from the base ot the mountains the water flows in a wide shallow stream over ground built up by deposit of the matter held in solution this stream thus flows for along distance the water being very clear and yet filled with moss and thai clasi of vegetation when the edge of the plain is reached the water spreads out and flows down the decline all the while spreading out and forming deposits of a calcareous SUBSTANCE eliat becomes like stone little pools are made h re and there by the process of this deposit building up narrow walls that grow in height while the pools become deeper and as the building process is inward as well as upward arabe are formed from opposite fides that extend often until ahey reach each other thus forming caves which in time become coated inside alike to stalactites many of these caverns thus formed have be come dried up and the eaves are objects of interest to tourists who prope their way through them I think FULLY ONE ACRES are covered with this clasa of formation some of which have become perfect caves while the majority are only partially so and are open basins in many of which vegetation thrives farther away from the town upon a level plain a large mound fringed at the summit with shrubs rises some eight or ten feet above the common level going to the summit A SURPRISE awaits the visitor A basin some sixty feet in diameter contains a pool of water so clear that objects down in the unknown depths are visible the walls are very thin at the top and were formed by the game process as that described of formation springs all objects in the water are coated with white and everything placed in the water in the course of time becomes as if petrified these springs overflow in a succession of little lulls in basins resembling tuba and the great basin is called SWAN LAKE all the princ and objects of interest around soda springs would require weeks to visit and many columns to describe As we traverse the road to oneida extinct craters are seen rising above alio llio great plain f lava over which we travel in the excellent stage driven by mr williams the distance of thirty five miles is a pleasant plea saut ride full of interest to the lover of nature and alie road is not a difficult one even if we have to pass over asma mountain when we reach THE wa are charmed with the beauty of that stream for about five miles taft river is a succession of fall which are unlike any thing I ever saw before instead of filling from various steps formed by different strata these fall are from one basin to another formed by thin dams built up in the donrae manner as the caverns described at formation springs and yet unlike these rims or dams are perpendicular and thin and stall very in form in these basins the water is very clear and deep and fish are numerous
