Show I TAXES EXTREMELY HIGH. In Salt Lake City the tax levy has been fixed at 31 2 millsi which covers an increase of 1 2 mills in eounty tax, 4 mills by the city and 4 mills by the board of education This is an advance so great as to have stirred up considerable adverse comment, in Salt bake City. So far there is not a large city in the state, with the exception of Ogden, which liB6 not increased its tax levy lr Ogden the rate last year was 8.05 nulls, and the taxpayers will d'scover by consult ing their tax notices that the same rate of 8 05 mills applies this year. Weber county is asking for more money due to the fact that the county has obligated itself to construct part of fhe Ogden canyon road and carry a big percentage of the cost of the paving of North Washington avenue, both projects being recognised as state highways high-ways demanding county co-operation. The board of education has boosted its tax rate to a very high figure in order to meet the higher salaries of the teachers and th' interest on the building bonds which is now an obligation of no small degree. But taxes as a whole are growing extremely burdensome and some method should be devised to keep down the expenditures of state, county and city. There must be econemy or homes and business busi-ness will be confiscated by the tax collector. |
