Show 1101 FOR TEACHERS LIKE TOPIC X SUPEiTEIEIT Enlhusiastic concerning Uie business busi-ness like way in which the National Education convention was conducted in one of the finest of American industrial indus-trial cities, Superintendent Carl Hopkins Hop-kins of the city school system returned from Cleveland, O., early last evening. By far the most interesting session, according to Mr. Hopkins was that; dealing with the Financial Program of Educational Systems in which it was very clearly evident that while there is wide divergence of opinion among j educators Us to the advisability or otherwise oth-erwise of teachers joining unions in order to better their conditions of labor la-bor and salary, yet it was manifest that the feeling of the convention Is entirely against teachers forming unions and becoming affiliated with the American Federation of Labor. "Some educators are strongly in favor fa-vor of a city, state and national union of teachers, formed entirely of educators educa-tors and influenced entirely by people hi the teaching profession, having 'its life distinct and separato from the American Federation of Labor," he saidd. In tnis conference also It was. evident evi-dent that the need for better salaries and first rate conditions of service is recognized by the lending educators. There are to bo great advances in salary sal-ary all over the country for the next year. "J. W. Withers, superintendent of St. Louis, Mo., in ono of the finest speeches at the assembly said the av orage increase next year in the system under his management would be 3700 a year. Great Falls, Mont , will pay grade teachers from 1300 to 1S00 and high school teachers from 51500 to 2200; Boise, grade, 1400 to ?1800, high school ?1G00 to ?2400; St. Louis grade $1200 to ?2100, high school S1G00 to 3200. "About 140,000 teachers left thoir positions for work in other branches during last year, and 35,000 class room were left without teachers." Superintendent Hopkins is now at work on a scale that he will submit to tho board of education at an early meeting. oo |
