Ambitious to follow in the path of his forefathers, he turned to the stage upon his graduation from college, making his debut in a stock production of "Cumberland, '61." This was the beginning of an extensive exten-sive stock experience in which he played the leading roles of almost every ev-ery successful play produced during , the time he was on the stage. His last appearance behind footlights was on Broadway as co-star with Irene Fenwick in "Mary's Ankle."
