Show ENGINEER KILLED AND THREE MEN ! INJURED IN TERRIFIC EXPLOSION AT TIE LOCAL GAS PLANT Robert W. Lone. 44 years of ago, re-liding re-liding at 2761 Wall nu-nuf, was instantly in-stantly killed and three employes were Injured in the explosion of a large gas meter at the plant of the l"tah Pow -I Light company, at 1:20 o'clock yesterday yes-terday afternoon. The- explosion partial!) wrecked th? 1 recently-built addition to the plant About 17,500 damage was done to buildings and equipment. The -a service of the city was disrupted from the time of the explosion until early this morning The cause of the ex- . plosion has not been determined. The meter was a new one and had recently been installed. Shock Affects Men. The injured men were Richard An-derton, An-derton, Robert McElroy and William Wardleigh. They were taken to the De hospital where ihey were given medical attention Wardleigh's condition condi-tion today was such as to permit removal re-moval to his home It Is stated that the condition of Anderton and M( Kirov Ki-rov was not considered serious. Both were reported as recoorlng from the I effects of the shock. Superintendent Escapes ' Alfred Bruerton. plant uperlntend-'n. uperlntend-'n. had been conferrlnc with A P Merrill, district manager of the company, com-pany, near the building 111 which the meter was housed. The latter had left the plant, about fhe minutes before, be-fore, and Rruerton strafed toward the building when 'he explosion occurred He was within a few feet of the spot ; where hundreds of bricks fell and one ' brick whined past his head Other employes near by. narrowly escaped Injur by flying debris The east and wesl brick vails had large holes torn in thr-ni by the explosion and some of the roof beams wore shaken loose. Aid to the Injured. As soon as possible after the explosion, ex-plosion, Mr. Bruerton sent the injured riicn to the Ieo hospital and removed the body of Mr Long Mr Bruerton said the explosion was that of a new gas meter which had recently re-cently been Installed as part of the company's plan of enlargement. He added that he could not determine the cause of the accident. Long Killed Instantly. ' Long,. Bruerton said, was working in tront of the meter and was Instantly killed. The top of his head was crushed. The other men were at onn side of the meter The meter is a large cylinder shaped steel cae which measures the amount of gas made in the new unit of the plant.
