Show " Inspector George Shorten oppressed 'himself as well pleased with the pa triotic service which the minister andj I people of the First Congregational j church havo rendered to the city of Ogdcn by offering the use of the basement of the church as an emor- i ! gency hospital. At 10 o'clock this morning seven i beds had been installed and It is lioped that by late this afternoon everything ev-erything will be ready there to take care of twenty patients. In charge is Nurse Swainston who will care for I the cases In the day time; Nurse TIl-'ley, TIl-'ley, city school nurse, will be on duty at night, and Miss Rae Woodcock of Salt Lake City will have charge of 'the hospital kitchen. Carroll of Mountain States Telephone and Telc-graph Telc-graph company. requests that the pat-"rons pat-"rons of the telephone company be patient pat-ient oyer the impaired service until such time as a full force of girls con be obtained to malec up the present . loss due to sickness. Seventeen of the operators are ill, ; the majority suffering of influenza, and the central exchange is seriously handicapped. Efforts are being made to restore -efficiency and in the meantime, those calling "central," must be considerate enough to allow for the disorganization which the epidemic has caused. 1 "I regret to say," Mr. Shorten said, "that seven deaths from the Spanish 'influenza occurred during the night and it does not look as though the epidemic ep-idemic were diminishing in this city at all. There is absolute need for the greatest possible care and common sense. The city and county authorities authori-ties are doing everything they can to combat the malady and there Is a heartening response on the part of the people. Fewer people are crowding crowd-ing down town and great care is being be-ing exercised in many of the stores, where already the attendants are wearing the indispensible gauze mask. It ought to be compulsory in every store and office in the city where the assistant!-, have to meet with great numbers of people during the day," |
