Show 1 ARCHBISHOP FOR I THE TOFORCES Forbids All Clergymen in His Diocese to Assist in Prohibition Pro-hibition Cause. WILWAUKEE. Wis June 2 Archbishop Arch-bishop S. G. Messmer has sent a pas-torlal pas-torlal letter to all clergymen of his diocese in which he forbids them assisting as-sisting prohibition proaganda. The lot -'.or in part follows: "It becomes more evident from day to day that Hre is a strong sectarian power back of the present prohibition movement. We may not deny that many Catholics, priests among them, are actuated by good motives and acting act-ing in good faith in this matter. But they fail to see the absolutely false principle underlying iue muvcuicui and the sinister work of the enemies of the Catholic church, trying to profit pro-fit by this opportunity of attacking her in the most sacred mystery entrusted en-trusted to her. For these reasons I hereby posi tively forbid all pastors ot parishes in this archdiocese from allowing any prohibition speeches to bo given on i ! -i any premises, be it the church, the school or a hall. "On the other hand this is a most' opportune time to preach on the Cash-ollc Cash-ollc virtue of temperance, exhorting every one to practice true moderation I in eating and drinking and even total1 abstinence from intoxicatinK drinks. "Prohibition is in no sense moderation; modera-tion; yet this is the true meaning of the cardinal virtue of temperance." The letter was read in Catholic churches yesterday. |
