Show i ROBT. M'QUARRIE, HONORED GUEST OF SECOND WARD, IS GIVEN A PURSE OF S2500 BY HIS FRIENDS i Last night at the Second ward hall, ! Bishop and Patriarch Robert McQuar-j McQuar-j rle was the honored guest at a sociable given as a testimonial for his more than 5-1 years' services as head of the ward's church activities. It was one of the greatest demonstrations of the kind ever held in Weber county, j The climax of the event was the I presentation to the retiring bishop of a purse of 32500, as a token of the ; rospect and esteem in which the vener-I vener-I able man was held by all who knew him. Honored with Bishop McQuarrle wore his two faithful counsellors, George Shorten and C. J. A. Lindquist, who were each presented with a com-I com-I bined edition of the Bible, the Book of j Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and j Pearl of Great Price. ; The program started shortly after 8. 1 o'clock. Seated on 'the stand were Bis-! Bis-! hop McQuarrle, Elders Shorten and Lindquist, Apostle David O. McKay, Presidents L. W. Shurtliff, John Wat-'. Wat-'. son and A- L. Scoville, of Weber stake. President John L. Herrick 6f the western west-ern states mission and Elder J. M. Thomas, with the present bishopric of the Second ward George E. Browning and Counsellors Newman and jones. Welcome Address. Bishop Browning announced the purpose of the meeting and paid tribute trib-ute to the honored guests in words of the h ighest praise. J Apostle D. O. McKay eulogized the venerable bishop most impressively. 2 He expressed the regrets of the First Presidenoy at not being able to attend the meeting. The speech of presentation of the ptirse to Patriarch McQuarrle and of the books to Elders Shorten and Lindquist Lind-quist was mado by President Alva L. Scovillo, In language characteristic of this gifted speaker. In accepting the gift, Patriarch McQuarrie said his work for the church, among the people of the ward, had been work of lave and pleasure. Other brief addresses were made, all praising tho retiring bishopric for their ' unselfish labors among tho people. Interspersed In-terspersed with these talks were musical musi-cal numbers by prominent vocalists and instrumentalists of tho church. Following the formal part of tho evening's program the amusement hall was the center of attraction and there the crowd danced u ntll midnight, and enjoyed the bounteous refreshments supplied.
