Show GREAT STEAMER ISjMBED Steel Cargo Carrier of 12,000 Tons Capacity Built in 24 Working Days. OAKLAND. Cal.. Aug. 5. Built in 24 working days, the steel cargo car-rlor car-rlor Invincible, 12,000 tons capacity, was launched in Oakland harbor at high noon today from the Alameda yard of the Bpthlohcm Shipbuilding corporation. This is claimed by the yard managers as a world's record Tho speed in construction was at the rcqupts of Charles M. Schwab, head of the Bethlehem corporation, director di-rector general of the omorgoncy fleet corporation. When ho raised tho blue pennnnt of the shipping board, awarded award-ed for the best ship construction for May in the United Slates, over the Alameda Ala-meda yard, he asked the men to got tho Invincible ready for launching ih 30 days. They promised to do it in 28, but have cut tour days off that figure. The raising of the blue pennant was part of tho ceremonies attendant upon the launching of four boats from tho same yard on the Fourth of July. Among them wns the. Defiance, which was built in 30 working days. Fifteen hundred men have been employed em-ployed day and night on the Invincible, Invinc-ible, a sister ship of the Defiance, the keel of the former having been laid within a few seconds after the latter slid down tho ways. Two days' interruption inter-ruption in the work was caused by a strike of tho bollormakers: This was amicably settled. Tho yard managers say that much of tho credit for the quick construction construc-tion is due to James Gregg, foreman of the shlpflttlng department, and Janes Kearman, foreman of riveters. The men themselves also have strained every effort In breaking the record. The Invincible Is the tenth steel vessel- to be launched by this yard in 191S, and the twenty-fourth to be launched In Oakland harbor. It brings the tonnage of the Alameda yard up to a total of 120,000 and of the harbor har-bor to 243,000. This is an average of one vessel every nine days. Tho Invincible is a single screw turbincr, with a speed of oloven knots loaded. It Is 440 feet long between perpondlculars, 55 feet beam and 39 feet deep. It was ordered by the Cun-ard Cun-ard Steamship company and commandeered comman-deered by the United State?. |
