Show 'THE GIRL IN BUSINESS x fjj I Always Play the Game Fair and jil You'll Be Treated Fair. I 11 BY EDNA EG AN. , EES, you do have your problems ; just a3 cycry one dsc has them. 1 To begin with, there is the ' problem of making the sodal 1 end and the business end meet. I know 1 that many prefer to advise the climinn- 1 tion of the sodal end of it altogether if 1 'you arc to be a successful stenographer, : or bookkeeper, or clerk, or whatever ; else you arc If you arc young and : eager and high-spirited, but, most of all, of the right mental and moral caliber, v you can actually make a reasonable amount of sodal success helpful in your attaining success in business. Remember, Remem-ber, though a "reasonable" amount For example, no .girl, no matter what her abundance of vitality, can expect to be thoroughly alert if she habitually keeps late hours. Last night's music invariably comes between you and a column of figures; now, honestly, doesn't it? On the other hand, a long day's work made doubly long and hard by a late engagement the night before renders you physically and mentally unfit un-fit for tonight's affair. And so the girl who plays too hard must needs find herself her-self a growing failure in both spheres of life- Once you aoprcdatc the value of moderation in all things, even the best of things, you arc on a fair way to cultivating the most1 valuable of habits. hab-its. If you will take the trouble to profit by it, I am quite sure that you will find my Suggestion a possible solution to one of your biggest problems. But before be-fore I begin making suggestions about your lesser problems, let mc give 3ou just a word of advice on office etiquette. Yes, a great many of the things that I am about to say have already been said ; but that docs not argue against their bearing repetition. To begin with there is an appalling number of girls who don't even know how to dress for their places in the workaday world. No, I'm 1 ! lot going to insist or even champion V 't' ;tiff-starchcd masculine shirtwaists, tor- lU' :urcsomc choker collars, "sensible" j t ;hocs or any of the utterly unbeautiful , aits of wearing apparel that the typicnl ; susincss women is erroneously supposed j to garb herself in. The pjn average office building is certainly no j setting for picture hats, perilously high j $i J French heels, ganzy hose, diaphanous i -.y i blouses or a display of jewelry. Did it Pf $ ever occur to you that real elegance is v ' . j quiet? And so, if you would give the f-h! impression of fastidiousness, begin by H- L$ toning down in the way of self-garnish- JQ ; ing. Again I would advise you to avoid , j rfe extremes. 1 Then there are your manners and jl Ljg mannerisms to inspect and overhaul. ' r 3 Arc you the "grouch" or the office "cut- j, up?" Most girls starting out into the I, In world can, if they arc perfectly honest, J tjfi classify themselves as one or the other.
